1 Agenda March 17 Journal Gallery Walk and Voting Reflection Berlin Conference Journal: Which idea behind imperialism made you the most uncomfortable? Why?

2 Gallery Walk and Voting I will let you go with your table, While you are waiting for your turn to vote please answer the Reflection questions in 3-4 sentences each. Take a look at you class period’s propaganda posters. Decide which set of posters persuades you the most that imperialism is a good idea On a piece of paper provided, rank the posters from the most convincing to the least (you may not vote for your own)

3 Reflection In your Journal answer the following questions Why did Imperialism happen? Who did Imperialism benefit? Why? Why was Imperialism seen as a good thing? If the U.S. had a chance to become an Imperialist nation today, should we do it? (Please consider all the causes of imperialism)

4 Causes of Imperialism Africa is easy to invade European countries were technologically advanced. Railways and advanced naval ships gave them easy access to Africa The increase in industry required vast resources that Africa had The amount of territories added to the wealth of the larger nation. Thus other larger countries were gaining colonies causing a race for the “untapped” land of Africa.

5 The Berlin Conference Answer the first 3 questions on your handout. When you have finished discuss your answers with your group and come to a consensus.

8 Dramatizing South African History Read “The Boer War: The Suffering of the Civilian Population”  Find information that will help you portray motives, feelings, and actions of the different cultural groups involved.  Read “Three Groups Clash over South Africa” (Pages 776-778) Decide on a group to portray  Zulus  Boers  British Create a skit  Using an incident from the above reading section create a skit that would exemplify one of the group’s values and goals. For Example:  Zulu: War council deciding weather or not to fight the British  Boers: A day on the Great Trek  British: The discovery of gold or diamonds in South Africa
