Broadwater School History Department 2 God’s Warriors Christendom and the Holy Land Page 112 Questions The name of the city that was being attacked was Jerusalem / Constantinople. You can tell that the attackers were Christians because they killed the Saracens / Sassenachs. You can tell that the city was important to the attackers because they slaughtered lots of defenders / wept for joy when they had captured it. The knights attacked Jerusalem with siege towers / ladders to get over the walls. Then they killed / comforted many of the defenders.

Broadwater School History Department 3 God’s Warriors Christendom and the Holy Land Page 113 Questions You can tell this as a Christian map because it has a picture of Mohammed / Christ on it. Muslims never drew pictures of Mohammed. You can tell that this is a Christian map because Jerusalem / Rome is drawn in the centre. This was the most important place in the world for Christians. Page 114 Question People went on a Crusade to show God the strength of their belief. They hoped it would help them to get to Hell / Heaven.

Broadwater School History Department 4 God’s Warriors Christendom and the Holy Land Step 1: Motives for going on a Crusade Jerusalem was the most important place in the world for Christians. Jesus / Mohammed had lived and died in the Holy Land. Christians wanted to go on package tours / pilgrimages to Jerusalem The Hold Land was / was not controlled by the Muslims.

Broadwater School History Department 5 God’s Warriors Christendom and the Holy Land Page 115 Questions The three places where the Pope suggested that God had told him what to say were: “I speak to you …”, “In the name of …” and “God Himself has …”. The Pope suggested that the message had come from God, so that nobody / everybody would argue with what he asked them to do. The Saracens had upset the Pope by “killing great …” and “destroying …” The Pope made joining a crusade sound attractive by promising land / houses, wealth / poverty and forgiveness / punishment for sins.

Broadwater School History Department 6 God’s Warriors The Crusades begin Step 2: More Motives for going on a Crusade Obeying God: In 1295, Pope Urban / Town asked all Christians to launch a Crusade to recapture the Holy Land. Revenge: Pope Urban said that the Saracens had slaughtered Pigs /Christians. Land: The Crusaders could have good land / beaches in the Holy Land. Forgiveness: Crusaders would have all their sins punished / forgiven by God – it was an open ticket into heaven / hell. Love of war: The Pope said war was a noble / bad tradition that God wanted continued. Medieval people liked / hated war.

Broadwater School History Department 7 God’s Warriors The Crusader Knights Page 116 and 117 Questions A tournament was a mock / serious fight, used as sport and for training. Medieval knights tried to impress women in discos / tournaments and by going to fight in a crusade / boxing match. The Knight is kneeling because he is taking his vow / praying to recapture Jerusalem from the Saracens / Spanish. I can tell that the knight in the picture is a crusader because he has …….. on his surcoat (jacket). The woman on the right is giving the knight a helmet (choose the best ending) because she thinks he might be injured because he has forgotten it as a token of respect for him being a crusader.

Broadwater School History Department 8 God’s Warriors The Crusader Knights Step 3: More Motives for going on a Crusade Honour: Was important because knights wanted to have the shame / honour of fighting for God. The honourable / dishonourable thing to do was to keep your promise to recapture Jerusalem. Bravery: By going on a crusade a knight would demonstrate his bravery / cowardice. This would impress God and earn the disrespect / respect of other knights and women. Love: Knights went on a crusade to show their love / hatred of God and to earn the love / fear of women, who they hoped to impress with their bravery / cowardice.

Broadwater School History Department 9 God’s Warriors Other Crusaders Step 4: More Motives for going on a Crusade Criminals: People went on a cruise / crusade to escape justice or to get away from their wife or husband. Personal Gain: People went to get rich / become poor by plundering captured cities. Punishment: Church Courts pardoned / punished people by sending them on a crusade. Pardon: People went on a crusade to earn a free pardon / praise for all of their sins. This would guarantee entry into hell / heaven.
