Past Perfect Simple Tense
The past perfect is used for an action which happened before another past action or a specific time in the past. Example: When Jim came to the cinema, Ann and Stuart had already entered to the cinema. (They entered to the cinema First. Jim arrived to the cinema afterwards).

Past Perfect Simple Tense
The past perfect is used for an action which finished in the past and whose result was visible in the past. Example: She was happy. He had signed an important contract (the action finished in the past and its result was visible in the past too).

Form/ Use We form the Past perfect simple with had + the past participle of the main verb. Affirmative: I had eaten a delicious pie. Negative: I had not/hadn’t eaten a delicious pie. Interrogative: Had I eaten a delicious pie? Short answers: Yes, I had./No I hadn’t. etc

Time Expressions Examples:
The bus had already left by the time we arrived to the station. Karen went to bed as soon as her guest had left. We played Monopoly after we had finished dinner.

Examples: My sister had just got into the shower when the phone rang.
