5. The fall of China in 1949 to Mao Zedong and communist forces, along with new USSR nuclear capabilities… helped launch the 2 nd Red Scare and the rise of the era known as “McCarthyism”.

12. McCarthy’s decline in power and popularity accelerated due to his nationally televised hearings that were an investigation into alleged Army improprieties connected with the Communist threat.

13. Today “McCarthyism” is a term used to describe actions typified by name calling, unsubstantiated claims of wrongdoing, or “witch hunting”.
