12T-s Are Getting Dimmer… A multi-step phase-out process for the T-12 ballasts began in 2005 As of July 1, 2010, the Department of Energy prohibited the manufacture of T-12 magnetic ballasts Beginning July 14, 2012 many T-12 bulbs will be phased out of production and will not be available

New DOE Standards Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 Effective July 14, 2012 Affects linear and U-shaped fluorescent lamps and halogen PAR lamps Implements lumens per watt (LPW) regulations for linear fluorescent and halogen PAR lamps Will result in eliminating 4 foot T-12 bulbs, most 8 foot T-12 bulbs and some 4 foot T-8 bulbs Will result in eliminating all standard halogen PAR 20, PAR38 and PAR 38 within 40-250 watt range

Incandescent A19 Lighting Rated Lumens Typical Current Lamp Wattage Maximum Rate Wattage Minimum Rated LifetimeEffective Date 1490-2600100721,000 hours1/1/2012 1050-148975531,000 hours1/1/2013 750-104960431,000 hours1/1/2014 310-74940291,000 hours1/1/2014 The standard A19 incandescent bulb can no longer be manufactured for sale in the U.S. based on the following schedule:

Will it Make a Difference? The Alliance to Save Energy estimated that lighting accounts for 22% of total U.S. electricity usage, and that eliminating incandescent bulbs completely would save $18 billion per year (equivalent to the output of 80 coal plants)

Reflector Bulbs All incandescent R20, R30, R40, BR30, BR40, and BPAR reflector bulbs must meet halogen efficiency levels except: Lamps rated at 50 watts or less that are ER30, BR30, BR40, or ER40 Lamps rated at 65 watts that are BR30, BR40 or ER40 R20 incandescent reflector lamps rated 45 watts or less

Produce more green energy or reduce the need for energy? Which is more cost effective? Which is faster to implement? According to the Energy Cost Savings Council, energy-efficient lighting projects alone generate an average 45% return on investment, giving an ROI of just 2.2 years.
