Sir Edward Elgar Benjamin Britten Churchill would have listened to Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstances Marches and, in fact, he led a huge crowd in the singing of the British hymn Land of Hope and Glory, which is set to the tune of one of Elgar’s Marches, when WWII ended. Britten is best remembered as a composer of operas. Peter Grimes was, no doubt, one that Churchill would have known. Popular songs of the time Venues: Music halls or taverns, radio. Victorian music hall songs, such as, “I am Henery the Eighth, I Am.” (1911) These were often humorous songs that made fun of events in history or of the time and were usually sung in music halls or taverns. They became part of British popular culture. “Mad Dogs and Englishmen,” which Churchill listened to on his way to meet U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The song makes fun of the British and their ways when in other countries. A popular love song of that time was a 17 th century poem by Thomas Ford, which was set to music and heard on the radio. The first two verses explain why it was a much loved song: There is a ladye sweet and kind, Was never face so pleased my mind, I did but see her passing by And yet I love her till I die. Her gestures, motions and her smile, Her wit, her voice my heart beguile, Beguile my heart I know not why, And yet I love her till I die.
