6 Regional Training Unit Slide 6 The Problem is sometimes how we see the problem Two battleships assigned to the training squadron had been at sea on manoeuvres in heavy weather for several days. I was serving on the lead battleship and was on watch on the bridge as night fell. The visibility was poor with patchy fog, so the captain remained on the bridge keeping an eye on activities. Shortly after dark, the lookout on the wing of the bridge reported. “light, bearing on the starboard bow.” “Is it steady or moving astern?” the captain called out. Lookout replied, “Steady, captain, which meant we were on a dangerous collision course with that ship. The captain then called to the signalman, “Signal that ship: We are on a collision course, advisable for you to change course 20 degrees.” Back came a signal, “Advisable for you to change course 20 degrees.” The captain said, “Send, I’m a captain change course 20 degrees.” “I’m a seaman second class,” came the reply. “You had better change course 20degrees.” By that time the captain was furious. He spat out, “Send, I’m a battleship. Change course 20 degrees.” Back came the flashing light, “I’m a lighthouse.” We changed course.

20 Regional Training Unit Slide 20 You are listening to me when... You come quietly into my private world and let me be me; You really try to understand me even if I’m not making much sense; You grasp my point even when it’s against your own convictions; You realised that the hour I took from you has left you a bit tired and drained; You allow me the dignity of making my own decisions even though you think they might be wrong; You do not take my problem from me, but allow me to deal with it in my own way; You do not offer religious solace before I am ready for it; You give me enough room to discover for myself what is really going on; You accept my gift of gratitude by telling me how good it makes you feel to know that you have been helpful. Samaritans, South Africa Communication involves listening

21 Regional Training Unit Slide 21 Communication involves listening You are not listening to me when... You do not care about me; You say you understand before you know me well enough; You have an answer for my problem before I’ve finished telling you what my problem is; You cut me off before I’ve finished speaking; You finish my sentence for me; You feel critical of my vocabulary, grammar or accent; You are dying to tell me something; You tell me about your experience, making mine feel unimportant; You are communicating to someone else in the room; You refuse my thanks by telling me you haven’t really done anything. Samaritans, South Africa

22 Regional Training Unit Slide 22 Habit 7 Sharpen the Saw Sharpening the saw is about constantly renewing ourselves in the four basic areas of life: physical, social /emotional, mental and spiritual. It is the habit that increases our capacity to live all the other habits of effectiveness. Habit 7 promotes vision, renewal and continuous improvement, safeguards against burnout and entropy, and puts the organisation on a new upward growth path. For a family, it increases personal and family activities such as establishing traditions that nurture the spirit of family renewal.
