German Level B1 LISTENING COMPREHENSION

 The audio file selected for the listening exercise is a podcast for learning German by a native German speaker on the topic of “Denglish”.  The 5 min audio file on “Denglish” is about how the German language appropriates many words from English, as well as other languages. PODCAST – SLOW GERMAN

 The goal is two-fold –  to help the students understand an authentic text spoken by a native German speaker.  to point them in the direction of the vast resources for learning German that exist online to enable self-study. GOALS

 Begin with discussion on the various foreign words there are in English.  Make a list of these words on the black board.  For example: Kindergarten, Guru, Wanderlust, Zeitgeist, Chai, deja-vu  The aim is to get the students to think critically about how languages borrow from each other. STEP 1: SETTING THE CONTEXT

 Introduce the concept of ‘Denglisch”  Brainstorm with the students and create a list of Anglicisms in German that they already know.  For example: Meeting gecancelled geposted Laptop STEP 2: PRE-LISTENING EXERCISE

Trotzdem – ich freue mich, dass Ihr Deutsch lernt und werde auch in den nächsten Wochen versuchen, Euch dabei zu helfen. ACTIVITY 3: FILL IN THE BLANKS
