Endocrine System O Endocrine System : The endocrine system regulates the functions of the organs in the body by using all of the glands and the hormones they produce to maintain homeostasis.
Location O Gonads in the female body are the ovaries, located inside the abdomen. O The male gonads are called testicles, located in the scrotum.
Role and Function O Make gametes or haploid germ cells O Sex cells are the gametes
Hormones Secreted O Testosterone O Progesterone O Estrogen
Testosterone O Increased growth of body hair on face, chest, axillary region, pubic region, lowers voice, thickening of skin.
Progesterone O Promote change in the uterus during the female reproductive cycle, affects the mammary glands, and regulates gonadotropins from the anterior pituitary
Estrogen O Development of the breasts and the ductile system of the mammary glands in the breasts O Increased disposition of adipose tissue in the subcutaneous layer generally and in the breasts, thighs and buttochs particularly O Increased vascularization of the skin.
Cancer O Testicular Cancer O Causes: exact cause is unknown O Abnormal testicle development O Klinefelter Syndrome O Symptoms O Discomfort or pain in the testicle, or a feeling of heaviness in the scrotum O Pain in the back or lower abdomen O Ovarian Cancer O Causes O Family History O Age (occurs more in women over 65 years old) O Symptoms: not all due to cancer O Pressure/pain in abdomen, pelvis, back, legs O Nausea, indigestion, gas, constipation, or diarrhea
Klinefelter Syndrome O Causes O Having one extra X chromosome O Symptoms O Abnormal body proportions (long legs, short trunk, shoulder equal to hip size) O Abnormally large breasts O Infertility O Sexual problems O Less than normal amount of pubic, armpit, and facial hair O Small, firm testicles
Interesting Facts O The survival rate of testicular cancer patients in the early stage is 95% O Testicular cancer is the most common form of cancer in men between the ages of 15 and O Klinefelter syndrome also increases your risk of: O ADHD O Breast cancer O Learning disabilities (ex. Dyslexia) O Depression
Bibliography O Book O Sheir, David and Jackie Butler and Ricki Lewis. Hole’s essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology. New York: McGraw- Hill Higher Education, Print.
