2 Form n Statement: n We use infinitive without “to” n Examples: I wash, you like, we learn, they catch n In 3rd person singular, we add: -s, or -es to the end of the verb n Examples: she lives, he works, it finishes (after -s,-sh-ch) Spelling: -y -ies (studies, tries); does, goes Exceptions to 3rd person: have has
3 Form n Negative: n don’t/doesn’t + verb n Examples: I don’t like, he doesn’t drive (in 3rd person singular), they don’t do any sport n Question: n do/does + subject + infinitive without “to” n Examples: Do you work? Does she drive? Where do they live? What do you do? n Short answer: n Yes/No, pronoun + do/does/don’t/doesn’t. n Examples: Yes, I do. No, he doesn’t.
4 Use 1 n 1) Something is true in general. n Example: The earth goes round the sun. n 2) Something happens all the time or repeatedly. n Example: I usually go away at weekends. n 3) How often we do things. n Example: I get up early every morning.
5 Use 2 n 4) With words always, never, usually, often, sometimes. n Example: Julia never eats breakfast. n 5) With state verbs promise, enjoy, like, feel, hate, smell, taste, regret, know, hope, own, believe, have, suggest, apologise, advise, insist, agree, refuse etc. n Example: I promise I won’t be late. n 6) We talk about timetables, programmes etc. (future meaning) n Example: The bus leaves Prague at 11:30 and arrives in Liberec at 12:45.
