3 What aspects made fighting on the Western front unique?

4 Cause: – Prolonged exposure to cold, wet, unsanitary conditions How?: – Little access to running water, standing in the mud/pools of water for long hours Symptoms: – Feet turning red or blue – Possible amputation (loss of foot/leg) Prevention: – Change socks twice a day – Whale oil barrier

5 YUMMY!!!! Why? – Searching for food at night Problem: – Contaminated food & caused infection Extermination: – Dogs, shooting, stabbing – Rats produced offspring quicker than the soldiers could kill them

6 Cause: – Contaminated (bacteria) food and water – Contact with infected person How?: – Poor sanitation in the trenches Symptoms: – Inflammation of the lining of the large intestines – Stomach pains, diarrhea, vomiting & fever

7 Cause: – Bites of body lice – Cause not discovered until the final year of the war Symptoms: – Headaches, muscle aches, stomach pain, rashes, fatigue, loss of appetite This bites!

8 Claim to Fame: – Only dog to ever be promoted to Sergeant Tricks: – Making everyone happy – Finding wounded soldiers, warning his unit of poison gas attacks – Capturing a German spy!

9 Why? – U.S. military used more than 200,000 carrier pigeons to relay messages Name Origin: – “Dear Friend” in French Claim to Fame: – Saving 194 soldiers by delivering a warning message despite being shot TWICE!!!
