30 Unit 1 Meeting at the Airport
Part Two Unit 1 Meeting at the Airport Task 2 Directions: Read the following manuscript carefully, and do the exercises. Trying One Topic after Another In talking to a person you have just met and about whom you know nothing, the best approach is to try one topic after another, usually not by asking questions that can be answered "yes" or "no" but by asking his advice or opinion. From his answer, hopefully you can carry on a conversation. Don't be afraid of a period of silence. Think before you speak. It's sometimes difficult to know whether it's appropriate to chat with the visitor. Some people are friendly and will engage you in an interesting and detailed conversation. Others like to chat a bit about the weather. A few will tell you their life stories. Some just prefer to be left alone. Whatever the situation, take your cue from the visitor.

31 Unit 1 Meeting at the Airport
Part Two Unit 1 Meeting at the Airport Make an attempt to open a conversation with a question such as "How was your flight?" and if he answers "OK" or "Fine", you may want to drop it there unless he picks it up again. If , however, he gives you a detailed answer full of stories, that's an indicator he's open to conversation. Even if his answer is short but unconventional such as "Rotten" to the question of how his flight was, he's left you an opening to ask "why" or "That's too bad. Did you have has bad weather?". If he makes a comment about the rain, you might say something about the weather in general, but don't go into a lengthy monologue about your problems getting to work in the downpour that morning. You will leave the visitor with the impression that you are an interesting and interested person and, just as important, a good listener when you don't monopolize the conversation out of panic that nothing will be said if you don't carry the conversation ball all by yourself.

32 Unit 1 Meeting at the Airport
Part Two Unit 1 Meeting at the Airport If you find the visitor's opinion totally unacceptable, try to change the subject as soon as possible. If that doesn't work, excuse yourself from the conversation, particularly if you care intensely about the subject and might become emotional in your response. Certainly, stop talking as soon as the visitor appears to be growing tired of it or seems to want to be quiet. Don't take a visitor's falling interest in chatting with you as a personal rejection. They should be given the opportunity to be comfortable.

43 Unit 1 Meeting at the Airport
Part Two Unit 1 Meeting at the Airport Task Exercise

44 Unit 1 Meeting at the Airport
Part Two Unit 1 Meeting at the Airport

45 Unit 1 Meeting at the Airport
Part Two Unit 1 Meeting at the Airport

46 Unit 1 Meeting at the Airport
Part Two Unit 1 Meeting at the Airport Exercise 2 1. carry on 继续,进行 2. engage sb in conversation 使某人参加谈话 3. take one‘s cue from sb
