Christmas – themed Core structures for KS2 French Starter / 5-minute activities (based on the Hampshire End-of-Year 6 Transfer Agreement for Languages) Jo Rhys-Jones December 2011

2 Yr.6 should know these core elements well after 4 yrs of entitlement:
Additional language to be considered a bonus and non-essential. Topic areas are not to be specified. Nouns Awareness that nouns can be m or f; how to recognise s. or pl; Dictionary skills. Alphabet Key phoneme/graphemes ch, ou, é/er/et/ez, gn, on/an, in/ain, oi ; simple awareness of silent letters. Adjectives Colour, size and some simple adjectives. Basic awareness of position / agreement. Core structures C’est… It is… Ce n’est pas… It isn’t… Il y a… There is / there are… Il n’y a pas de… There isn’t / aren’t... J’ai I have... Tu as… You have... Il/elle a… He/she has... Je n’ai pas de I haven’t got / don’t have … Je suis I am... Tu es… You are... Il/elle est He/she is… J’aime… I like... Je n’aime pas… I don’t like... Je voudrais I would like… Numbers At least to 31. Ideally up to 69. Up to 100 is a bonus. Days/Months Quelle est la date aujourd’hui? Quelle est la date de ton anniversaire? Telling the time (On the hour) Il est une heure. - It is 1 o’clock. Il est deux heures. – It is 2 o’clock. Recognise & answer basic questions. Qu’est-ce que c’est? What is it? Où est..? Where is..? Quel âge as-tu? How old are you? As-tu? Do you have..? Aimes-tu? Do you like …..? Comment tu t’appelles? What is your name? / comment t’appelles-tu?

3 How to use these slides:
As a starter or 5-minute filler activity Display one slide on board. Ask children to use mini-whiteboards to write down as many sentences as they can using the structure. Set a time limit of 2 minutes and ask groups to read back their best sentences. If stuck there are reminders and suggestions underneath each slide in the notes

How many sentences can you make in French using this structure? You have 2 minutes! C’est C’est = It is Eg: C’est un chapeau C’est le Père Noël C’est une renne

5 Ce n’est pas What does this phrase mean?
How many sentences can you make in French using this structure? You have 2 minutes! Ce n’est pas Ce n’est pas = It isn’t Eg: Ce n’est pas un chat. Ce n’est pas Monsieur Johnson. Ce n’est pas bon.

6 Il y a What does this phrase mean?
How many sentences can you make in French using this structure? You have 2 minutes! Il y a Il y a = there is / there are Eg: Il y a un sapin de noël. Il y a trois rennes. Il y a beaucoup de cadeaux.

7 Il n’y a pas de What does this phrase mean?
How many sentences can you make in French using this structure? You have 2 minutes! Il n’y a pas de Il n’y a pas de = There isn’t / There are not any Eg: Il n’y a pas de sapin de noël. (There isn’t a Christmas tree.) Il n’y a pas de cadeau. (There aren’t any presents.)

10 Tu as....? What does this phrase mean?
How many sentences can you make in French using this structure? You have 2 minutes! Tu as....? Tu as..? (or As-tu...?) = Do you have...? Eg: Tu as un cadeau? As-tu un vélo?

11 Il a What does this phrase mean?
How many sentences can you make in French using this structure? You have 2 minutes! Il a Il a = He has Eg: Il a un vélo. Il a des cadeaux.

12 Elle a What does this phrase mean?
How many sentences can you make in French using this structure? You have 2 minutes! Elle a Elle a = She has Eg: Elle a un vélo. Elle a un iPod Touch.

13 Je suis What does this phrase mean?
How many sentences can you make in French using this structure? You have 2 minutes! Je suis Je suis = I am Eg: Je suis anglais (m) Je suis anglaise (f) – I am English. Je suis grand (m) Je suis grande (f) – I am tall. Je suis content (m) Je suis contente (f) – I am happy.

Je n’aime pas Je n’aime pas = I don’t like (usually followed by le/la/les) Eg: Je n’aime pas les carottes = I don’t like carrots. Je n’aime pas le dinde = I don’t like turkey. Je n’aime pas chanter... = I don’t like singing.

16 Il est What does this phrase mean?
How many sentences can you make in French using this structure? You have 2 minutes! Il est Il est = He is.. Eg: Il est grand. (He is tall) Il est féroce (He is ferocious).

17 Elle est What does this phrase mean?
How many sentences can you make in French using this structure? You have 2 minutes! Elle est Elle est = She is Eg: Elle est grande (She is tall) Elle est méchante (She is wicked)

18 Je voudrais What does this phrase mean?
How many sentences can you make in French using this structure? You have 2 minutes! Je voudrais Je voudrais = I would like Eg: Je voudrais un coca. Je voudrais un ‘Nintendo Wii’
