1 Le Pronom Y Cathryn Apted, Pd. 4A Y replaces a preposition of place (chez, dans, à la/au, etc.), and means there The order changes from: subject verb object to subject object verb Ex: I play soccer = Je joue au footThey play that? = Ils y jouent? I play that = Jy joue Negative: The ne and pas surround the y and verb You dont go there = Tu ny vas pas Commands: Y goes after the verb Go there = Vas-y Negative: Ne and pas surround y and the verb, and the y and verb swap places Dont go there = Ny vas pas Passé Composé: Subject, y, then the form of être or avoir, verb He swam there = Il y a nagé Negative: ne and pas go around the y and the être/avoir She didnt eat there = Elle ny a pas mangé When there are two verbs, the first verb conjugates to the subject, then the y, then the second verb in infinitive form We love playing there = Nous aimons y jouer Negative: ne and pas surround the first verb You dont like running there = Vous naimez pas y courir

2 Le Pronom Y cont. et En Vocab: Expressions of time, often used in y phrases SouventOften QuelquefoisSometimes De temps en tempsFrom time to time ParfoisOccasionally RarementRarely Ne…presque jamaisAlmost never Ne….jamaisNever In a phrase using these expressions, the set up is the same, with one of these words at the end, as opposed to being after the verb in a regular phrase I sometimes play volley ball = Je joue quelquefois au volley I sometimes play that = Jy joue quelquefois Ne…presque jamais and ne…jamais do not have pas We almost never eat there = Nous ny jouons presque jamais They never listen to music there = Ils ny écoutent jamais En has a few different uses: 1) En replaces a partitive (du, de la, des, d, de) and a noun, and basically means some or any The order is just like y in affirmative and negative Ex:I want some lemonade = Je voudrais de la limonade I want some = Jen voudrais

3 Le Pronom En 2) En also replaces a noun introduced by a number, and the reply is set up as: subject, en, verb, number Does she want a car? = Est-ce quelle veut une voiture Yes, she wants one = Oui, elle en veut une He has three birds, and you? = Il a trois oiseau, et vous? We have two = Nous en avons deux Negative: un(e) disappears, ne and pas surround the en and verb No, I dont have one/any = Non, je nen ai pas 3) Replaces de + noun after an expression of quantity as subject, en, verb, quantity Do I have a lot of money? = Jai beaucoup dargent? Yes, you have a lot (of them) = Oui, tu en as beaucoup Negative: ne and pas surround en and verb, with quantity after pas No, you dont have a lot = Non, tu nen as pas beaucoup Commands: Just like y Do that = Fais-en Il y a: en replaces the partitive and goes between y and a Are there any books? = Est-ce quil y a des livres? Yes, there are some = Oui, il y en a Negative: ne and pas surround y en a No, there arent any = Non, il ny en a pas
