1 MEET THE TEACHER NIGHT SEPTEMBER 15,2016
Welcome Parents! MEET THE TEACHER NIGHT SEPTEMBER 15,2016

2 Class Work Reading – Children learn to read at their own pace. Continual practice at home and in school will help them gain confidence and fluency. It is important for a child to read aloud to acquire fluency. During reading class, the children will work on developing fluency, vocabulary and phonics, and will be introduced to grammar and the creative writing process. We have adopted the phonics program Fundations to enhance our curriculum. This year we have a leveled library in our classroom! Additionally, math, science, social studies, spelling, and religion are taught throughout the day.

Advance notice will be given for other tests. All homework will be posted on the website /first grade/Miss King. The children will start a weekly reading log in October. Also beginning in October, the children will have to do the IXL program for minutes per week. First grade children should read for at least 10 minutes every night.

6 Supplies All children need a zippered pencil case which contains 2 sharpened pencils, 1 box of 24 count crayons, an eraser and 1 glue stick. Please check that your child has crayons throughout the year and replenish as needed . I have extras of the other items (pencils, glue sticks, and erasers) in the classroom. If you have not sent in the supply fee of $9, please do so as soon as possible.

7 Books Textbooks have been covered in class.
Workbooks should be covered using a clear contact paper. When your child brings home books for homework or studying, it is very important that those books come back on the next school day.

8 Snack Please send in a simple, healthy snack and drink (water bottles only). Please pack your child’s snack in a Ziploc bag labeled with their name that he/she can reuse. This must be separate from their lunch box. No candy. Be mindful of allergies. We are a peanut and tree nut free school.

9 Lunch First graders are permitted to buy the hot or cold meal plan or a bagel. The meal plan comes with milk or water and two snacks. I will keep all lunch cards here in the classroom. Please discuss your child’s lunch choice with him/her. The lunch menu can be found on the website under lunch. The first grade has lunch before recess. Please make sure they have enough to drink in their lunch box on those very hot days.

10 Birthdays Please let me know in advance if you would like your child to celebrate his/her birthday in class. Birthdays are usually celebrated at snack time 10:00. Drinks are not needed, but please send in napkins and/or plates. I will pass out party invitations if they are for the whole class, or for all the boys or for all the girls.

11 Miscellaneous Please label all sweaters, sweatshirts, and jackets with a permanent marker. A note is required if your child is normally a bus rider and will be picked up by you or if your child is going home with another parent. Please send in an absent note if your child has missed a day of school. The school nurse must also be notified by a phone call on the day of an absence. First grade will host the February 3rd First Friday Mass. The class will participate in three Waterfront Center Programs. They will have a “Touch Tank” presentation, learn about “Sea Shells to Sea Creatures”, and finally enjoy “Beach Day” at the WFC in June.

12 Class Mothers Our class mothers this year are Dena Valado and Paula Petrone. They will be organizing a mother’s tea. Things to be discussed--volunteering to send in snack for holiday parties, signing up to do a craft with the class, etc.
