First Grade 2016 – 2017

2 INTRODUCTION Ms. Scobie 11TH year teaching Tonight- Overview
No conferencing tonight (sign up for a conference on the back table) CONTACT ME VIA

3 Breakfast Breakfast will be served in the cafeteria beginning at 8:05 a.m. Students eat in cafeteria- allow plenty of time to get breakfast and eat it Students sent to classrooms by 8:30 a.m.

4 SNACK HEALTHY Daily/Morning- around 9:40 or 10:40 NO SHARE RULE
Drinks are OK-water can stay on the desk Encourage hand washing Bathroom use is encouraged at this time NO PEANUTS

5 DISMISSAL Note required for any changes in how your child will be going home Send note if different person will be picking your child up Front door dismissal daily

6 NEWSLETTERS Posted each Monday on our website.
Lists events, skills being covered, Sight Words for the week

7 SIGHT WORDS Important part of reading program is students knowing Sight Words ON SIGHT Sight words are assigned at the start of each 5-day cycle. This WON’T always be on a Monday. Practice throughout the week If your child can read the word by sight, practice having him or her spell the word Students will be assessed on their sight words before and after each Unit – available on our website

8 HOMEWORK Contract on back of folder
Homework assigned on Monday for the week Each night: Math pages or worksheet, sight word practice, read for 15 minutes and talk, optional workbook pages 5 missed or incomplete homeworks = detention after school on Friday Please return text books and readers next day

9 FRIDAY FOLDERS Sent home most Fridays (if there are tests to be reviewed and returned) There will be a section dedicated to correspondence Sign folder – review tests with your child Sign and return tests

10 EXTRA HELP Offered TUESDAY and THURSDAY mornings at 8:05am
Will send a note home letting you know if your child should attend Tutoring assigned based on MAP scores and beginning of year tests 5 student maximum

17 REPORT CARDS 3 times a year
Not all concepts covered in first Trimester – will be indicated with an X Keep the report card Sign and return the envelope

18 Behavior Modification
Positive Reinforcement: Table Races, Shining Stars, Class Dojo 10 points on Class Dojo = Prize

19 BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS
Small treat (cupcakes, munchkins, cookies) Must be store bought and PEANUT FREE Usually celebrate in the afternoon – drop off at front desk PLEASE do not hand out invitations to a party UNLESS the whole class is invited (25 students) See FRIENDSHIP LIST

20 HOW YOU CAN HELP Keep in touch (Friday folders, call office, note in homework folder) Check and sign homework daily Check website each Monday Practice Sight Words SLEEP! Less TV, more reading Volunteer for trips

21 Encourage speaking in full sentences
Set up a quiet Homework space with supplies ONLY for homework Bring your child to school ON TIME – 5 times late is mandatory detention for your child. Drop off begins at 8:15am. Your child is marked late if they arrive after 8:30am. Sign up for a conference (in hall) Sign up for Parent Portal (Comp Lab)
