1 BELL RINGER 2/22 What does STI stand for?

2 Sexually Transmitted Infections
Mr. Galer Sexually Transmitted Infections

3 Fact or myth? Use the information provided to find out if each statement is a fact or myth. You and your partner should work together to find the answers more quickly! When I ask, raise a Green popsicle stick in the air if the statement is a fact, or raise a Red stick in the air if the statement is a myth.

4 You can get a sexually transmitted infection from a drinking fountain.

5 Infected mothers can transmit HIV to their unborn babies.

6 Some STIs can be spread by just using another persons towel or clothes.

7 Condoms help prevent the passing of STIs.

8 You can get a sexually transmitted infection from toilet seats.

9 People are born with STIs.

10 You can get HIV by kissing on the lips.

11 You can receive an STI from an infected person’s sneeze.

12 Abstinence is the best way to prevent getting an STI.

13 STIs are all curable.

14 Sexually Transmitted Infections
An infection caused by pathogens that are transmitted from an infected person to an uninfected person during sexual activity. STIs can be prevented by practicing responsible behavior.

15 What is risky behavior? Risk – Hazard or dangerous chance
Risky behavior are decisions or choices you make that could lead to a consequence.

16 Levels of Risky Behavior When Dealing with STIs
High Risk – A behavior where you have a high chance of receiving a STI. Low Risk – A behavior where you have a SLIGHT chance of receiving a STI. No Risk – A behavior where you have NO risk of receiving an STI.

17 Terms and Definitions Cure – the ability to heal back to normal
Treatment – applying of medication to help with symptoms of infection

18 How can STIs be spread? Sexual Intercourse Oral Sex Sharing Needles
Contact with Blood Physical Contact (Some… Not all) Mother to Child (Some… Not all)

19 How can STIs be prevented?
Avoid Contact with Blood Sharing needles Open wounds Abstinence Refraining from ANY sexual activity This is the only 100% effective method Using a condom When participating in any sexual activity Vaginal, Oral, Anal

20 EXIT ACTIVITY: No, LOW, OR HIGH RISK?
No Risk = Green Stick Low Risk = Yellow Stick High Risk = Red Stick Create a table with three columns on a scratch piece of paper. When Mr. Galer reads a risk activity, raise the appropriate popsicle stick color. Once we know what level risk an activity is, write it on your table!

21 BELL RINGER 2/23 Give an Example of a No Risk, Low Risk, and High Risk Sexual Behavior.

22 Pubic Lice Pubic lice are parasites (tiny insects) that live in pubic hair. Sometimes found in armpit hair, eyebrows, leg hair, or coarse body hair. Lice found on the head are known as head lice. Pubic lice are also known as crabs.

23 Pubic Lice Pubic lice symptoms:
Intense itching in the genitals or anus Irritability Presence of lice or small egg sacs, which are called nits, in pubic hair Pin-sized blood spots

24 Pubic Lice Pubic Lice can be spread by:
Close physical contact with someone Any type of sexual intercourse with someone Rarely, but possible that pubic lice can be spread by: Sharing Clothing Sharing Bedding Sharing Towels

25 Pubic Lice Pubic Lice are treatable! Pubic lice can be cured!
Treatment options: Some common brands of over-the-counter pubic lice medicine are A-200, RID, and Nix. Stronger prescription medicines are also available — ask your health care provider about them. Shaving, hot baths, or other "home remedies" will not work. Everyone who may have been exposed to pubic lice should be treated at the same time. That way they can avoid becoming infected again. All bedding, towels, and clothing that may have been exposed should be thoroughly washed or dry cleaned, and your home should be vacuumed.

26 Genital Warts Genital warts are caused by a virus.
Genital warts is when a person develops bumpy warts on their sex organs or anus. It is a rare possibility that people develop genital warts on their mouth or lips – but possible.

27 Genital Warts Genitals Warts Symptoms:
•Men and women with genital warts will often complain of painless bumps and/or itching. •Rarely, bleeding or urinary obstruction may be the initial problem when the wart involves the urethral opening (the opening where urine exits the body.) Warts in more than one area are common.

28 Genital Warts can take from 3 to 6 months to appear!
Genital warts are highly contagious. There is around a 60% risk of getting the infection from a single sexual contact with someone who has genital warts. Genital Warts can take from 3 to 6 months to appear!

29 Genital Warts Genital Warts can be passed by:
Any kind of sexual contact Passed from infected mother to child during birth

30 Genital Warts Treatments: No treatment is 100%!
Cryotherapy: This technique freezes the wart using liquid nitrogen or a "cryoprobe." Laser treatment: This treatment is used for extensive or recurrent genital warts. It may require local, regional, or general anesthesia. Disadvantages include high cost, increased healing time, and scarring •Electrodesiccation: This technique uses an electric current to destroy the warts. It can be done in the office with local anesthesia.

31 Gonorrhea Gonorrhea is caused by a bacteria.
Gonorrhea is one of the most common STIs. On estimate about 820,000 people in the U.S. get a new gonorrhea infection each year!

32 Gonorrhea Symptoms: Unusual discharge or pus from the penis or vagina
Burning sensation when urinating Most symptoms show within 16 days of becoming infected. Some people do not show ANY symptoms externally Women may experience abdominal pains Men may experience painful or swollen testicles

33 Gonorrhea If Gonorrhea is not treated it could lead to:
Harm of the reproductive organs Males and females can become sterile Attacking of joints Spreading to blood stream (life threating)

34 Gonorrhea Gonorrhea can be treated. Gonorrhea can be cured!
Antibiotics are prescribed by the doctor. Antibiotics can not reverse any long term damage done by gonorrhea.

35 Herpes Simplex Herpes Simplex is caused by a virus.
776,000 people in the United States get new herpes infections every year. Herpes has two types: Type I – Sores around mouth Type II – Sores on or around sex organs

36 Herpes Simplex Type I and Type II can infect either area of the body.
1 in 6 people from the ages of 14 – 49 have Type II of Herpes

37 Herpes Simplex Symptoms: Flu like symptoms – body aching, fever, etc
Small blisters on or around the infected area Blisters will break and leave sores that take 4 to 6 weeks to heal

38 Herpes Simplex Herpes can be spread through:
Any type of sexual contact Direct contact with a herpes sore Mothers to child during the birthing process

39 Exit Activity What STI did you find most shocking today?

40 Bellringer 2/24 How can pubic lice be passed?

41 Chlamydia Chlamydia is caused by a bacteria.
In 2011, 1,412,791 cases of chlamydia were reported to CDC from 50 states and the District of Columbia Chlamydia is most common among young people. It is estimated that 1 in 15 sexually active females aged years has chlamydia.

42 Chlamydia Chlamydia is known as the ‘silent’ infection. Symptoms:
Most people don’t experience any signs or symptoms until weeks after exposure. Unusual discharge from the penis or vagina Burning sensation when urinating

43 Chlamydia Chlamydia can lead to: Pain in the pelvic area
Swollen and painful reproductive organs Serve harm to the reproductive organs Becoming sterile

44 Chlamydia Chlamydia is 100% curable with antibiotics! Infected mothers can transmit chlamydia to their children causing eye infections and/or pneumonia.

45 Syphilis Syphilis is caused by a bacteria. There were 46,042 reported new cases of syphilis in 2011 in the United States. Symptoms typically show in 21 days, but can take up to 90 days to begin.

46 Syphilis is transmitted from ANY direct contact to syphilis sores.
Syphilis has 4 different stages: Primary Stage Secondary Stage Late Stage Latent Stage

47 Syphilis Primary Stage:
Firm, painless, reddish-brown sore on the openings of the sex organs Sores can also appear on the lips, in the mouth, or other body parts

48 Syphilis Secondary Stage: Skin rashes Sores
Some people may experience flu like symptoms

49 Syphilis Latent Stage: Also known as the “hidden” stage.
Both primary and secondary symptoms disappear Latent stage can last for years at a time

50 Syphilis Late Stage: Can appear 10–30 years after infection began
Symptoms of the late stage of syphilis include: Difficulty coordinating muscle movements Paralysis Numbness Gradual blindness In the late stages of syphilis, the disease damages the internal organs, including the brain, nerves, eyes, heart, blood vessels, liver, bones, and joints. This damage can result in death.

51 Syphilis Syphilis can be treated with antibiotics from the doctor!
There is a cure for syphilis but cannot reverse the damage that is already done!

52 Syphilis Syphilis can be transmitted from any type of sexual contact.
Syphilis can also be passed from mother to child. This may lead to: Low birth weight Early delivery Possibility of a stillbirth Serious medical conditions

53 HIV HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus.
It is the virus that can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, or AIDS.

54 HIV No safe and effective cure currently exists, but scientists are working hard to find one, and remain hopeful. Meanwhile, with proper medical care, HIV can be controlled. HIV treatment helps people at all stages of the disease, and treatment can slow or prevent progression from one stage to the next.

55 HIV HIV has multiple stages: Acute Infection
Clinical latency (inactivity or dormancy) AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome)

56 HIV Acute Infection: Occurs 2 – 6 weeks after infection
Most contagious stage! Flu-like symptoms Fever Sweating Tiredness Headache Sore throat

57 HIV Clinical latency (inactivity or dormancy):
During this phase, HIV is still active, but reproduces at very low levels. You may not have any symptoms or get sick during this time. With treatment, people can live in this stage for decades.

58 HIV AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome): Unexplained weight loss
Fever and night sweats Diarrhea Swollen glands Unusual sores Immune system becomes too weak to fight off infections which causes death.

59 HIV There is no known cure for HIV. Treatment early can delay the start of symptoms. Unlike some other viruses, the human body cannot get rid of HIV. That means that once you have HIV, you have it for life.
