Important People Franklin D. Roosevelt prompted Congress to create federal government programs which provided jobs and helped restore the environment Aldo Leopold wrote A Sand County Almanac which discussed the relationship between nature, people, and animals within one environment

Noteworthy Events The Civilian Conservation Corps was established in 1933. The CCC provided jobs for unemployed men, usually tending farms, parks, or creating outdoor recreational areas, dams, and levees. In 1948, The World Conservation Union was founded and held its first meeting in Gland, Switzerland. Also in 1948, twenty people died and seven-thousand fell ill due to air pollution in Donora, Pennsylvania.

Noteworthy Events Cont. In 1950, the Nature Conservancy is formed, which worked “to preserve the plants, animals, and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.” In 1952, smog in London kills four-thousand. In 1956, one-thousand more people were killed by London smog, and the Water Pollution Act grants states money to built water treatment plants.

Laws and Acts of 1930-1960 In 1934, the Taylor Grazing Act was passed, which regulated cattle and other livestock gazing on public lands. The Taylor Act was passed in direct response to the alarmingly fast rate of soil and farmland degradation. In 1934, the Fish and Wildlife Act was passed. This act later required all federal agencies involved with water-projects to consult the Fish and Wildlife Service to determine the impact projects would have on the local fish and wildlife population. The Soil Erosion Service was created in 1935 under the Soil Conservation Act in order to prevent livestock surplus that harmed land by overusing resources.

Laws and Acts of 1930-1960 Cont. In 1937, the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act sends the proceeds from a new tax on gun and ammunition sales to wildlife research and protection. In 1947, the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) was passed, which regulated the use of pesticides.
