3 People of the Chinese Communist Party Mao Zedong the first leader and chairman of the Communist Party. The leader of China from 1949 until his death in 1976. Zhou Enlai was the first Premier of the People Republic of China. Zhou Enlai was Mao Zedong right hand man. Mao was the philosopher and Zhou was the diplomat. He died eight months before Mao in 1976

4 People of the Chinese Communist Party Deng Xiaoping took control of China in 1978 and ruled China until his death in 1997. He was the last of the original members of the Communist Party He began reforming China’s economy creating a more free market economy which allowed China to grow economically

5 Tiananmen Square 1989 Students take over Tiananmen Square in Beijing demand more freedoms. Held the Chinese government to a standstill for weeks. Until government decided to clear out the students from the square The Chinese army moved and forced everyone to leave killing hundreds of people and arresting many more.

6 Great Wall of China The Great Wall of China is made of several different sections over the years. It stretches over 5,500 miles. It was built for defensive purpose to keep the Mongols and Manchurians out of China.

7 Three Gorge Dam 3Gorge Dam began in 1995. Completed in 2006. Began generating electricity in 2008. Will be at full capacity by May 2012. Built to control flooding on the Yangtze River 1.3 Million people were displaced by the construction of the Dam 3 gorge Dam is on the Yangtze River

8 Religion of China Religion in China has been characterized by pluralism since the beginning of Chinese history The Chinese religions are family-oriented and do not demand the exclusive adherence of members Buddhism and Taoism are major religions of China Confucianism is more a philosophy than a religion. It is based on respect for elders and others.

9 States of China There are twenty- three provinces, four municipalities five autonomous regions and two special administrative regions in the People's Republic of China.

11 Beijing Beijing is a municipality directly under the Central Government and the capital of the PRC, with an urban population of 7.61 million. It is not only the nation’s political center, but also its cultural, scientific and educational center, and a key transportation hub Shanghai Shanghai, a municipality directly under the Central Government, is China’s largest city, with an urban population of 9.86 million. Advantageously located, Shanghai is halfway down China’s mainland coastline, where the Yangtze River empties into the sea. An important comprehensive industrial base and harbor, Shanghai plays an essential role in the national economy.

About 120 km from Beijing, Tianjin is an important port for ocean and offshore shipping, and foreign trade. Chongqing Also a municipality directly under the Central Government, Chongqing is the largest industrial and commercial center in southwest China, and a hub of land and water transportation in the upper Yangtze valley, with an urban population of 6.61 million

13 Hong Kong Become a colony of Great Britain in 1836 July 1, 1997 Hong Kong turned over to China Hong Kong has a "high degree of autonomy as a special administrative region in all areas except defense and foreign affairs.“ Hong Kong is one of the world's leading international financial centres, Hong Kong has a major capitalist service economy characterized by low taxation and free trade.

14 Physical Features of China China can be divided into 2 major regions. Western highland regions of the Plateau of Tibet and Gobi Desert. The region is sparsely populated with many non-ethnic Chinese.

15 Physical Features of China The Eastern lowlands are the other region of China. This region is the breadbasket for China. The major industrial region of China. The Yangtze, Yellow, and Xi Rivers are important rivers of China. All the Rivers run west to east providing China with good forms of transportation from the interior of the country.

17 Climates of China There are 6 major climates found in China. The highland, desert, and steppe climate found in the west. Theses climates are not good for agriculture Humid subtropical and humid continental climates found in the southeastern and northeastern regions of China In the very northeastern region of China subarctic climate.

19 Economy of China China for the first time has more people living in an urban environment than a rural environment. China is flexing their economic might. They have the second largest economy in the World next to the United States In the last 10 or 15 years the world has seen China’s economy grow faster than any other country. China is now competing with the United States and other Western European countries for vital resources.

20 China’s Future China is competing with the United States for influence and dominance over the Pacific Rim. China has become an equal partner with other countries when it comes to foreign policy issues. China can no longer ignore major foreign policy issues such as North Korea. China has finally become a major player in the politics of the World.
