5 Tiananmen Square Massacre Many Chinese also began to demand political freedom and organized into huge rallies Was allowed by the government at first until June 1989 –Protesters ordered to leave and they refused

12 Social Changes (Family) Cultural Revolution reversed teachings of Confucius (filial piety) –Stressed loyalty to the state over all else Creates national unity but weakens family bonds No parent arranged marriages

13 Women In 1950, women and men became equal –Can own property –Receive an education –Work outside of the Home –Equal Pay for Equal Work Almost all women work outside the home Man no longer dominates the family
