.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 1. I took Distance Learning because: ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I am interested in military history and our school does not offer classes. - I could not fit into the AP Psychology class offered at my school. My schedule was too busy. - I deal with animals everyday of my life and it's what I want to learn more about. - I have been thinking about going to college for something in the sign language field. - I need a language and also, I really wanted to start taking this class because my uncle is deaf and I wanted to sign him. - I love marine biology. I took this because I needed a science class and I have taken other classes in the DL and liked it better than normal classes. - I need anatomy for the work I'll go in to. – I needed a language. I wanted to take AP European History and it was only offered as a distance learning class - It was the only choice I had if I wanted to take AP Economics. - It was the only option for taking Japanese. - It was the only way to take mandarin in my school. - Our school stopped offering our Spanish 5 and Spanish 6 except through distance learning. I wanted to get the college credits associated with the class. - I wanted to take a challenging course in my senior year. I wanted to experience a different way of learning with a different school. Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Students most frequently said they took Distance Learning because: They wanted that particular subject or instructor. The subject they wanted was only offered in DL. They were interested in meeting new students. They needed that course. They wanted to try something new or different. They wanted a challenge, AP or college credit.

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 2. What did you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Connecting with other students and being treated as if we were in college. - I enjoy having the opportunity to meet people from different schools and I am thankful to be able to take classes my school doesn’t normally offer. - I liked being able to meet students from another school; it opened up my eyes to other school districts and different opinions. - I liked meeting new person and getting new input on ideas and getting to work with someone new. I like that it feels like a college class more, because we get to sit in rows and experience a lecture, much like college. The technology is cool too. - I liked that the classes were easy to interact with and that the teacher was very accommodating. - There is no limit really. You can talk and learn with practically anyone in the world if you wanted to. - We became more independent. - That even though the teacher was in another room, it was still like she was here. It made available a class that would not have otherwise been. Also, the use of technology provides skills helpful in other areas. And you get to associate with other schools and new students. It was a new experience and helped prepare for more college-like situations. - It was different then any other class I took. Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Most frequently noted as liked by DL students: Meeting and interacting with different students, teachers and schools. The interesting and comfortable learning environment. The opportunity to try something different. The subject or course material. The opportunity to work and learn with technology. The teacher or teaching assistant.

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 3. What didn’t you like about Distance Learning? ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Cell phones caused distortion and this happened with many people making it harder to listen. - At some points the technology did not work properly and the other school would have to wait to receive work. - I didn’t like how difficult it was to hear the other students in their classroom due to their microphones. - I didn’t like that sometimes there are technical problems that disrupt class, sometimes its harder to communicate with the other class. We had a difficult time hearing because people wouldn’t turn their cell phones off and all we could hear was an extremely loud buzzing. - The teachers at the other sites were not strict and the kids were disrespectful which disrupted my learning. - The teacher couldn’t control the students at his school. They were annoying and nasty! - It was a little difficult to stay focused because lack of supervisors in other sites. My teacher, he spent more time with his students then us. - The teacher did not create a fair and comfortable learning environment. He favored his onsite classroom at the expense of the other sites and spoke rudely to us in particular. That all of the schools periods aren't the same so we don’t have a full 40 minutes to learn. - Not being able to go to the teacher and asking how your doing and getting extra help. Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Student Comments Most frequently noted as disliked by DL students: The teacher’s lack of organization or ineffective use of the equipment. Not providing enough opportunity for extra help or making up a class. Technical problems with audio or poor student/microphone positioning. Lack of interaction with or lack of attention from teacher or other students. Disruptive students or lack of discipline. * This year, the most common response to this question was an indication that the student had nothing that they disliked. Not dealing effectively with bell schedule or school calendar differences.

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 4. What changes would you suggest for the Distance Learning classes? ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Section C Better technology (Clearer televisions, etc.) - Better sound equipment. Many times the teacher could not hear our class. - Find someway to get rid of background static / noise - Having better cameras and better audio. The camera should be closer to the students. - More camera views, so the teacher doesn’t have to change each camera on the overhead view from the projector. - Updated technology. - Screens bigger so you can see people better. - Bigger TV's, school access to email, iPods in the room to be engaged with the class at the same time. Perhaps the teacher could set up a website where all of the schools can access a class schedule and worksheets as well as any homework so that it is easier to stay connected when we're in different locations and can't check in to get papers when needed. - That the teachers and aides should be more organized with the work. - I would suggest that email be used more. It was slightly time consuming having the teacher fax over tests and notes to the other school and a waste of paper if the other end lost their copies. Email would be best. I would suggest better scheduling and better communication between different sites. For the teacher to actually come to our school. - More educational field trips. - More discipline between teacher and students.

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Student Comments Most frequently suggested changes: More balanced attention to classes by the teacher and better interaction. Visits by teachers to remote classes and or combined class field trips. Updated environment chairs desks air conditioning etc. Technical improvements and better student/microphone/camera positioning. Teachers should use the system more effectively and be better organized. Deal more effectively with bell schedule and school calendar differences. * This year, the most common response to this question was an indication that the student had no changes to suggest. Better discipline, particularly re: loud talking, tapping and class disruptions.

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ What surprised me about distance learning was how easy it was to adjust to the cameras and classes. - It is a really fun way to take a class and the person on the other side of the camera can get just as involved as we the host site can. - I was surprised at how comfortable the other students were with asking the teacher questions even though they weren’t in the same room. I was surprised at how similar learning was with all of this new technology as opposed to learning in a regular class. I was surprised by how easy it was to interact with students in other schools. - How interesting it was to talk with the kids in the other school. - It was relatively easy for both parties to hear and understand each other. I was surprised that I learned as much as I did. - That I was actually able to learn a lot of information in a short amount of time. - What surprised me was the difference it made on my school life. I learned a lot better and quicker with DL. How easily you can connect with other schools. - The ability to have everything work itself out even with glitches - The ability to use the ELMO and computer for other sites and how close you become with the other schools. Student Comments 5. What surprised you about Distance Learning? Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support That it is unexpectedly easy to become comfortable with the system. The environment is comfortable and enjoyable. It worked so well. Student Comments Most Frequently noted as surprising about distance learning: Interaction with remote teachers and students was easy. An appreciation for the advanced technology. Section C How much we were able to learn over the system. * The second most common response to this question was an indication that there was nothing surprising about distance learning.

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments I didn’t feel there were any limitations. Yes, the teacher did make effort(s) to compensate for limitations in the DL system. No, the teacher did not make an effort to compensate for limitations in the DL system. 6. Did you feel the teacher made an effort to compensate for any limitations in the DL system? Host SitesReceive Sites Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “ No”) Please describe what you wish your teacher could have done. ______________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Didn’t mute us so we could only talk to his students. I felt like we weren't getting a lot of attention. I don’t feel like I had the opportunity for extra help or one on one conversations. I wish our teacher interacted more with us and making a website or keeping in contact. It would have been better for our grades. Made himself more available, we had no way to communicate with him out of class, no email etc. Should have had our sound on so he could hear us all the time and LOOKED at us once in a while. Treated everyone fairly instead of showing preference towards his students. I wish she had paid more attention to other classes besides her home school. I would like the teacher to visit our school more often. Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Students most frequently wished that the teacher would: Make a greater effort to include receive site students in discussions, Pay equal attention to them and get to know them. Be more organized and prepared. Visit remote sites at least once and offer some extra help. Receive site students that feel the teacher did not make an effort to compensate

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “ Yes”) Please describe the efforts the teacher made to compensate. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ He came to our school for review sessions, let us out early when possible, emailed us regularly. - He emailed us and we were able to email him for homework and anything we missed or to hand in projects. - She was fair to every student for grading and blackboard was a great tool to use for communication. – When our instructor was out for an extended period of time sick, we were given means to study on our own and continue learning. Our instructor was positive and flexible. - Always asking if we heard her or saw her. Sometimes there were sound errors and he worked well around them. Our teacher made sure we interacted with the schools by singing to the camera. He would answer any emails etc. ASAP and would always check in when he was at your site. Finding ways to get work back and forth if the conventional way wasn’t working, adjusting the volumes, getting us caught up and on the same page when schedules differed. Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Most frequently recognized DL teacher efforts Students that feel the teacher did make an effort to compensate Provided extra help and review sessions. Helped to quickly resolve technical problems. Promoted interaction and participation. Made e-mail or phone contact available or used BlackBoard. Visited receive sites and got to know the students.
