.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I think the access to technology (computers, internet, blackboard, etc.) is the biggest strength of the program. A lot of technology in the room allows for easy transitions and more variety of teaching techniques. Students are more well behaved too. The most important strength is that the program offers courses to schools who are in need of them and gives the students more course options. Usually, it is to get to meet and hear perspectives from other school districts. We enjoyed having Indian Lake as a remote site. Mrs. Bruso is a wonderful teaching assistant and the students are always great! Technology is readily available. I can teach to more students than just a regular class. Behavior problems are nonexistent. Provides districts with the option of teaching electives they may not teach in house. 1. What are the strengths of distance Learning? Comments

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Dated technology in some buildings. Dependent upon class size - some difficulties when classes were larger. For marine science, it is really nice to have dissections to demonstrate anatomy. Because of the DL setup it is difficult to allow students to do the dissections themselves, and dissections usually end up being a demonstration instead. We had several sound issues during the year. Also the block scheduling times did not line up between Maple Hill/Averill Park/Saratoga Springs. Sometimes the scheduling of the receiving school conflicted with our class time. Often, they missed class due to field trips, assemblies, band lessons etc. It can be challenging at times to learn names and communicate on a personal level with students over at another site. Differences between students from different schools, especially with regard to performance levels. Smaller school students are shy and don’t speak up. Little chance to speak individually with students 2. What are the weaknesses of Distance Learning? Comments

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Easier use of Apple devices (iPad for videos, iPod for music) and volume issues that sometimes accompany using these devices, clearer video (if possible) so that more detail can be seen on video and student and teacher cameras. At the start of every course year all participating students must meet together in person. This needs to happen at least once every year so that student interactions will be better. Students need to get more used to asking questions, even if it is uncomfortable. Need a better system to transport materials as one class I taught was not in our courier system. Need a budget to purchase materials for each location to be able to complete projects and hands on assignments. Update all TV rooms with a projection screen. More frequency to go visit schools. 2-3 per quarter instead of once a quarter. 3. What changes would you suggest for distance learning classes? Comments

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I lost an entire unit due to delays between schools. 4-5 minutes a day adds up. Yes, Seeing the progress the students had made from the receiving site was tremendous. They really came a long way. Made me a better teacher for my Saratoga students. They have access to all the online materials I make available for the DL students. The camaraderie amongst the students between three buildings was amazing. I made a new good friend. I found that students from the different schools were very “cliqueish” and/or competitive. None, I perform so teaching to a wider audience with video is something I am comfortable with. 4. Are there any outcomes from teaching this course that you had not expected? Comments

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Easier to incorporate computer information (pictures, video, audio) for a variety of purposes at a moments notice. Of course, had to adjust to delays between schools. I try to use the equipment to its fullest abilities, but even then I am limited. I don’t like that I can’t move about in the room. I don’t like being fixed to one place. I changed my scoring rubric to streamline the number of papers. Google Docs, makes classroom collaboration easier. Wolfvision and Visualization. I bring "kits" for the hands on projects to the remote school. I bring the kits when I visit. 5. Did you use any new instructional methods to effectively teach in the DL classroom? Comments

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________.________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I did use email, and I was very happy with that. I need to get away from sending and receiving faxes. It is old and slow. I faxed around 2000 sheets of paper and received the same amount. This is too much. Students email me assignments. I plan to make a class website. Facebook, Cell Phone, Email, Texting, Picnic, Class visit. Lots of email. Email, phone, fax, blackboard, field trip, DVD, YouTube. I used blackboard. Students could ask questions and turn in work via blackboard. Also, I was able to post notes and other class materials for students to access. Email, School Fusion. 6. Did you use any other forms of communication with the students in addition to daily distance learning classroom instruction (such as e-mail or telephone)? Comments

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support 7A. Did you visit your remote sites or arrange for them to visit you? Yes No There were 20 responses to this question. Comments

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Would like to. Side note: My aide (in Galway) was awesome!! Would do it all the time as long as she was the aide. Very knowledgeable. It was too hostile at one site, and it didn’t seem right to visit the other site. We had a field trip and I will visit the other site in the spring when we no longer have the other school with us. I went to each of the two schools once. I liked that but I don’t like it because I have to miss instructional time in my other classes. I visited my remote sites once a quarter. ADVANTAGES only - get to know kids, DL room, teacher, school - because more personal to the students. 3 times throughout the year. Visiting is very important and helpful. Yes twice. Meeting the kids face to face was a great advantage and helped develop the relationship with them. 3 times during the year, before the year began, before midterm and before the AP exam. 4 students came up to Saratoga for review. 7B. What were the advantages / disadvantages to visiting your remote school(s)? Comments
