.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2007– 2008 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 1. I took Distance Learning because: ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I had no idea the class was DL until I got into the classroom. - I think that DL did not have an effect on my decision to take Mandarin Chinese. I've had an interest in sign language since I was very little and jumped at the chance to take this class. - I really wanted to learn about the holocaust and I thought DL would be a new and good way of learning. I wanted to take AP Psychology and DL was the only way it was offered. - I wanted to continue taking French and my school didn't have French IV except over DL. I wanted to challenge myself at a difficult level. Also I wanted to be in a different learning environment. - I thought it would be a great new opportunity to take a class, receive college credit and interact with people from other schools. I wanted to try something new, a different learning environment to see how I might benefit from it. I needed to take another class to fill a period and I enjoy meeting new people from different schools. - It was offered to me and I had enjoyed a distance learning class I had previously taken. Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2007– 2008 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Students most frequently said they took Distance Learning because: They wanted that particular subject. The subject they wanted was only offered in DL. They needed that course. They were interested in the technology. They wanted a challenge, AP or college credit. They were interested in meeting new students. They wanted to try something different.

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2007– 2008 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 2. What did you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I liked the idea of cooperating and conversing with the students in other schools, it opens class up to interesting discussion and opinions. - I got to meet students at other schools and experience a class I normally wouldn't have access to. The size of the class, the technology in the classroom and the interaction with students in other schools. - I enjoyed the course, teacher, and my classmates. I also liked this method of learning and having class everyday for 40 minutes. The comfortable environment and how we can meet other people our age from different places. - I liked talking in front of the class because it taught me not to be so nervous and to talk louder. - It felt like I was in college and I had to make sure I paid attention and did my work. The fact that is was completely different than regular class. I like the class and teacher. You get to meet other people and have fun learning differently. - We were able to reach out and were not limited to what was offered at our home school. How the world has advanced so greatly that we can be taught as though we are from the future. - The new technology and interaction with others. - I liked how the teacher paid attention to everyone. Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2007– 2008 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Most frequently noted as liked by DL students: Meeting and interacting with different students, teachers and schools. The interesting and comfortable learning environment. The opportunity to work and learn with technology. The subject or course material. The opportunity to try something different. The teacher or teaching assistant.

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2007– 2008 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 3. What didn’t you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I did not like it that sometimes the system wouldn’t work correctly and we couldn’t see or hear the other school. - Sometimes the system wouldn't cooperate. I didn't like that if you missed a class it was not easy to make it up. - The teacher didn't give the equal amount of attention, I found it difficult to follow up. The teacher didn’t talk to us, and people kept hitting the microphones. - I didn't get to ask my teacher everything I wanted to, nor did I like that we had to leave other important classes early. All the loud noises the speakers make when the kids shuffled papers and hit the microphones. - I didn’t like how some of the students in the other school were disruptive. Feedback was terribly slow, we would take a test or turn in an assignment and wouldn’t get any comments until the end of the quarter, after several similar assignments have been done. The volume wasn’t always correct so we couldn’t hear well when there were subs and they didn't know what to do. Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2007– 2008 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Student Comments Most frequently noted as disliked by DL students: Not dealing effectively with bell schedule or school calendar differences. The teacher’s lack of organization or ineffective use of the equipment. Technical problems with audio or poor student/microphone positioning. Lack of interaction with or lack of attention from teacher or other students. Disruptive students or lack of discipline. * The second most common response to this question was an indication that the student had nothing that they disliked.

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2007– 2008 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 4. What changes would you suggest for the Distance Learning classes? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Section C Possibly make the sound easier to adjust. - Work on the technology just a bit and make it even easier to work with other schools. - Upgrade the technology. Have more trips where the schools interact face-to-face, meet the people other than through the television. - I think it would be much better if the teacher came to the other schools every now and then. A time for students to get help after class. – For the teacher to get one-on-one with a student. - More student-student interaction. – Make it easier for students to get in contact with the teacher. More organization. - Mailing/faxing out work ahead of time in case there are problems. - I would suggest that somehow they make it easier to make up a class. – The teacher should have a back up plan in case there are technical difficulties. Make sure the students in AP classes are serious about taking the course. - Make sure the kids absolutely want to be there. – Get aides that can better control their students. Try to make time schedules go along with class periods.

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2007– 2008 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Student Comments Most frequently suggested changes: Visits by teachers to remote classes and or combined class field trips. Better discipline, particularly re: loud talking, tapping and class disruptions. Teachers should use the system more effectively and be better organized. Technical improvements and better student/microphone/camera positioning. More balanced attention to classes by the teacher and better interaction. Deal more effectively with bell schedule and school calendar differences.

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2007– 2008 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I adjusted quickly…I quickly forgot that I was not in the same room, and that I didn’t feel self-conscious on camera. - How much I learned and how it was almost like taking a college course. - How smoothly everything went as far as the equipment always working. - The attention the teacher gave to every student. That I was able to hear and see every student from the other school clearly. – That the class was very challenging, and that I learned more than I did in my regular school. - How easy it is to communicate between classes. How easy it was for me to talk in class and how much it was like a normal class setting. How easy it was to learn, I was expecting it to be difficult to participate using cameras but it was no harder than a standard class. - You forget that you are looking at a TV. I was surprised about how easily papers and grades are transferred between classes. - How I can just talk as I regularly do, to a screen, to other students in different schools. The clarity of the other teachers and students. - It was like they were here. That it was so easy to interact with the teacher and other students. - Being able to work and learn with other students from different schools. Student Comments 5. What surprised you about Distance Learning? Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2007– 2008 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support That it is unexpectedly easy to become comfortable with the system. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2007– 2008 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments I didn’t feel there were any limitations. Yes, the teacher did make effort(s) to compensate for limitations in the DL system. No, the teacher did not make an effort to compensate for limitations in the DL system. 6. Did you feel the teacher made an effort to compensate for any limitations in the DL system? Host SitesReceive Sites Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2007– 2008 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “ No”) Please describe what you wish your teacher could have done. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ She could have made sure every school was involved and she could have waited when the system shut down or if one or both of the other schools was absent. He never gave us extra help or anything, he could've set up an online site or something with review questions. I wish he could've paid more attention to other students besides the ones in his room. I wish he had not favored students and been assertive in getting things done in both schools, I wish he had done a better job at keeping the schools unified. I wish the teacher could have been at our school more and focused on the topic at hand instead of rambling about nothing. I wish there could have been more responding to questions and giving comments on homework. Students at one of the other schools were disrespectful, there should have been more discipline. Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2007– 2008 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Students most frequently wished that the teacher would: Make a greater effort to include receive site students in discussions, Pay equal attention to them and get to know them. Visit remote sites at least once and offer some extra help. Be more organized and prepared. Receive site students that feel the teacher did not make an effort to compensate

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2007– 2008 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “ Yes”) Please describe the efforts the teacher made to compensate. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ He gave equal attention to both schools and when their systems were down he found new ways to teach. - He made sure we were all on the same level and paid all of us equal attention. – He made sure every student had a fair chance to speak. She assigned group work outside of class which gave us time to personally interact with the other students. - She always asked me if I understood everything. He had side projects for when other school was out. – The teacher reprimanded noisy students, gave detailed explanation when we could not see/experience something. She made sure everyone was able to make up quizzes or tests easily. - If the system was down she would try to fix it and it she couldn’t the lesson plans would be moved to the next day. - Our teacher was always flexible and willing to help us. He would record classes for anyone who missed a class. - He had offered morning classes to everyone. - He set up email that was very easy to use. She found a way to contact the other school if the system was down, mailing, faxing, and emailing. - Blackboard discussions made it easy to talk about class issues. Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2007– 2008 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Most frequently recognized DL teacher efforts Students that feel the teacher did make an effort to compensate Provided extra help and review sessions.
