2 Duma Fails Tsar Nicholas II ignores all advice that will take power from him, and nothing changes in Russia By 1915, many Russian soldiers in WWI have no rifles or ammunition

3 March Revolution In March 1917, workers in Russia go on strike Tsar is forced to step down and set up a temporary government Russia continues to fight in war against Germany

4 Lenin and Bolsheviks Vladimir Lenin was a communist He wanted an elite group, called the Bolsheviks, to lead a revolution that would create a communist, equal society for all

5 November Revolution Temporary government continues to fight in WWI against Germany, angering many The Red Guard (armed factory workers and sailors) easily overthrew the government Bolsheviks took power, making Russia a communist state

6 Civil War Treaty of Brest-Litovsk (March 1918): Lenin made peace with Germany, allowing them to withdraw from the war – Russia gives up a lot of land on the West to leave war – Allows Russians to now focus on winning the revolution – 3 years of Civil War follow where the Reds (communists) finally win

7 Soviet Union (USSR) The communist Bolsheviks: – Distributed land to peasants – Workers were given control of factories – No private ownership
