2 2-2 Unit 2 – Pathogens After this unit, you will be able to: –Explain the chain of infection and describe the links in the chain. –Describe how to break the chain of infection. –Describe the prevalence, mode of transmission, symptoms, period of communicability, incubation period, screening, and treatment for airborne and bloodborne diseases of concern to first responders. –Identify the possible exposure in case studies including the type of pathogen involved.

7 2-7 Breaking the Chain of Infection Pathogen –Keep your body’s immune system strong Mode of transmission and route of exposure –Wash your hands with soap –Use PPE –Avoid secondary contamination –Properly disposing of sharps & biohazardous wastes Susceptible host –Maintain good health –Stay physically fit

8 2-8 Exercise Objectives Read pages 2-11 and 2-13, so you’ll be able to: –Identify the airborne and bloodborne diseases that are of concern to first responders. –Recall two key points first responders should remember related to airborne and bloodborne diseases.

9 2-9 Airborne & Bloodborne Diseases Airborne diseases –Meningitis –Chicken pox –Tuberculosis (TB) –Influenza –SARS Bloodborne diseases –Hepatitis B –Hepatitis C –HIV Many do not manifest immediately. Many symptoms are similar to flu symptoms
