7 3. Hypertension: This is high blood pressure. The heart must work harder to pump blood and it weakens over time.  This may result in a heart attack. 9 What causes hypertension? Cholesterol can cause arteries to become clogged A diet high in salt can cause the blood to retain more water and increase the volume of blood. Nicotine, caffeine and alcohol can increase heart rate Heredity, age, lack of exercise, smoking and obesity
