2 The Battle of Gettysburg in 1863 was a major turning point in the war. Spring 1863: Lee launches more attacks in Union territory Goal: Break North’s will to fight July 1, 1863: Armies clash outside Gettysburg, PA Day 1: Union forces claim high ground Day 2: Lee unsuccessfully tries to push Union from “Little Round Top” Day 3: Pickett’s Charge fails to break Union lines Gettysburg turned tide against the Confed. Confederates never again attack North Britain and France refuse to help the Confederacy November 1863: Lincoln gives Gettysburg Address Renewed his commitment to winning Civil War Referred back to Declaration of Independence “new birth of freedom”

3 During 1864, Union campaigns in the East and South dealt crippling blows to the Confederacy. Lincoln puts Gen. Grant in charge of Union armies in the East Wilderness Campaign Series of battles to Capture Richmond, VA Grant slowly but surely advanced his troops through VA Stretched Confed. soldiers and supplies to their limit General Sherman carried out Union plan to destroy Southern railroads and industries Spring 1864: Sherman leads 100k troops toward GA Sept. 1864: Atlanta falls to Sherman Victory helped re- elect Lincoln November 1864: “Sherman’s March to the Sea” Union used total war – destroy everything Path of destruction 60 miles wide

4 Union troops forced the South to surrender in 1865, ending the Civil War. Early April 1865: Sherman closing in on last defender s in N.C. April 2, 1865: Grant breaks through Confed. defenses Lee forced out of Richmond April 9, 1865: Lee is forced to surrender at Appomattox Effects of War: 620,000 died Slavery ended in South Southern economy in ruins Tremendous hostility remained
