17. Riot or Pogrom This image recalls the 1614 riot in the Frankfurt ghetto led by Vincent Fettmilch. Economic and social antagonisms had long been simmering between the wealthy patrician families of the city and the guild craftsmen and petty traders, many of whom were in debt to Jews. Afterward, the Jews were expelled from the city, the Emperor outlawed the rebels, and their leaders were arrested and put to death.

18. Louis Bouwmeester (1842- 1925) as Shylock in Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice (written in 1598) performed in 1879 in Amsterdam. Shylock is a moneylender who takes a pound of flesh as collateral on a loan to a Christian merchant.
