1. Biography. 2. Queen Elizabeth. 3. Wars and overseas trade. 4. Russia. 5. Arts and culture. 6. Later years and death. 7. Literature.

Elizabeth Tudor was born on 7th September at Greenwich Palace. She was the second child of Henry VIII of England. Her mother was Anne Boleyn, the second of the king's six wives. Her birth was possibly the greatest disappointment of her father's life. He had wanted a son. Anne Henry VIII

When Elizabeth was three years old, her mother was beheaded because she was accused of having a relationship with someone else. Elizabeth was declared illegitimate and deprived of her place in the royal succession.

Eleven days after Anne Boleyn's death, Henry married Jane Seymour, but she died shortly after the birth of their son, Prince Edward, in 1537. Henry died in 1547 and he was succeeded by his son Edward. He in turn died in 1553. Edward VI

Mary the older sister of Elizabeth than became queen. She suspected Elizabeth of plotting against her and for a time had her imprisoned in the Tower of London. Fortunately, Mary died in 1558. Mary I

As a child, Elizabeth was given a very impressive education. She was taught by famous scholars, and from an early age it was clear that she was remarkably gifted. She had an especial flare for languages, and by adulthood, she could reputedly speak five languages fluently.

There were many men who wanted to marry the young queen. But Elizabeth never married. The queen herself declared on several occasions that she had no personal desire to marry. Francis, Duke of Anjou

Robert Dudley

When she ascended the throne in 1558, England was an impoverished country torn apart by religious squabbles. When she died at Richmond Palace on the 24th March 1603, England was one of the most powerful and prosperous countries in the world.

Queen Elizabeth Elizabeth succeeded to the throne on 17th November 1558. She was crowned Queen on Sunday 15th January 1559. The new Queen re-established the Protestant Church in England. She succeeded in uniting her people in a world that was divided by religious conflict. She managed to restrain Catholic opposition.

Wars and overseas trade Elizabeth gave her country a lot of self confidence. During her reign it built up its sea power and ships sailed across the seas to trade in the New World. At that time Spain controlled much of the trade in the New World.

Elizabeth sent Sir Francis Drake and other sea captains to raid Spanish ships and seize gold and other treasures that the Spanish had captured.

This was too much for Philip II of Spain so he decided to attack England. After years of preparation he put together a strong fleet of ships called the Spanish Armada. In 1588 the Armada sailed into the English Channel.

In the battle that lasted for nine days the British defeated the Spaniards because their ships were smaller and faster. Only a few of them managed to get back to Spain. Elizabeth had celebrated the greatest victory of her reign.

Russia Russia was ruled by a Tsar. Elizabeth was on good terms with Ivan IV, "The Terrible". The Tsar even proposed to her once, and during his later reign, asked for a guarantee to be granted asylum in England should his rule be jeopardized.

Arts and culture The Elizabethan Age was also an age of art and culture. Many musicians, scholars and writers came to her palace. William Shakespeare was the greatest writer of the period and wrote some of the world's finest plays and poems.

Later years and death The last years of Elizabeth's reign were troubled by scandals and revolts. Parliament started to criticize the queen and health problems made her weaker.

She died on March 24, 1603 at the age of 69. At her wish, Mary Stuart's son, James VI of Scotland became king of England and the two countries were united.

When I was thinking a subject of presentation I decided to choose an English famous figure. I love the English history. And I am especially interested in the English history of England in the XVI-XVII centuries.

The outstanding person of that time was the Queen Elizabeth I. That is why I have chosen the Queen Elizabeth I as a subject of my presentation.
