3 1. Britain and China had unfavorable trade balance….so Britain started sending Opium from India, but it was illegal there. 2. China asked them to stop & blockaded Port; British respond with force = Opium War 1839-1842 British win

4 3. Chinese agreements: – Open 5 ports to British trade – Limit taxes on imported British goods – Pay for war – Give Hong Kong island to British

5 4. Europeans lived in own sections under own country’s laws = extraterritoriality What did British do to adjust trade unbalance with China? Tai Ping Rebellion – Peasant revolt for social reform – After 14 yrs Western powers too much; Treaty opened new ports to foreign trade…
