2. In order to fully understand the poem you are reading, you need to have an understanding of the elements that the author is using. This may help you recapture what you already know about these elements. By the end of this power point, you will have understood the terms and will be able to explicate a short poem for homework.

Dictionary definition: Noun 1. a figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance, as in “A mighty fortress is our God. ”  The function of metaphor in poetry is to talk about one object or situation while alluding to another. It is used as a means of explanation. It is used as a figure of speech and as a form of analogy  Other examples are: You are the sunshine of my day Her teardrops are the daggers to my heart.

Dictionary definition: Noun 1. a figure of speech in which two unlike things are explicitly compared, as in “she is like a rose.”  Function: demonstrates similarities between two people or things. Similes are often confused with metaphors. A metaphor shows the meaning of one thing by pointing out something it resembles. A simile is easy to spot because it typically includes the comparison words "like" or "as” (Seattlepi) Other examples:  Her smile was bright like the moon.  His face was purple as a grape.

A rhyme is a repetition of similar sounding words occurring mostly at the end of lines in poems.  Function of rhyme: The function of rhyme in poetry is to establish structure while creating a pleasant or even beautiful symmetry among a poem’s verses. 8. Example #1 “Twinkle, twinkle little star How I wonder what you are” Classification: Tail Rhyme (This is the most common type of rhyme. It occurs in the final syllable of a verse or line.) Dictionary definition: Noun 1. the formation of mental images, figures, or likenesses of things, or of such images collectively: the dim imagery of a dream. 2. pictorial images, as in works of art. Function: a poem’s backbone or grounding rod because images are used to evoke a reader’s gut-level response. It stimulates your senses Examples: The old and broken door creaked as the child went in The eyes of the boy were of hate, you can see the wrath and the need for revenge as he saw his father pass by with a beer in his hands.
