Aim #7: How did the United States achieve victory in the Pacific? April 12, 2016

Do Now If Hitler hadn’t invaded the Soviet Union, do you think Germany would have won World War II? Why or why not?

I. Early Victories for Japan A.By July 1942, the Japanese had taken over most of the Pacific, including American possessions like Guam, Wake Island and the Philippines. B.When General Douglas MacArthur gave up the Philippines, he promised: “I Shall Return!” C.76,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war were taken in the Philippines, and subjected to horrible treatment by the Japanese on the Bataan Death March.

II. America Strikes Back A.In June of 1942, the Japanese attack Midway Island, where a key American airfield was located. The Americans were outnumbered 4 to 1, but they eventually won The Battle of Midway. B.Now, the U.S. can start pushing back towards Japan.

III. Victory Against Japan A.We use a strategy called “island hopping” (taking over Japanese controlled islands that were not well-defended) to get closer to Japan. B.Fall 1944: Americans under the command of General MacArthur retake the Philippines. We are getting close to launching an invasion of Japan. C.Japan fights back through kamikaze, Japanese suicide pilots who crash into American ships.

III. Victory Against Japan D. Thanks to a top secret project called The Manhattan Project, America has developed the atomic bomb by July of 1945. E. On August 6, 1945 we drop an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. On August 9, we drop a bomb on the city of Nagasaki. Over 110,000 people are killed. F. On September 2, Japan Surrenders. This is V-J day: Victory in Japan Day. The war is over!

Democratization: We help turn Japan into a Parliamentary Democracy, where people can vote. 3. Rebuilding: We give Japan $2 billion to help rebuild their economy.
