2. Lecture Notes: Ch. 16.4 Atomic Bombing (Part II) War in Europe was over, but NOT yet in the Pacific. Fall 1944, Allies kept moving in on Japan.

3. General Douglas McArthur returned to the Philippines & planned on to continue Island Hopping.

4. Battle of Leyte Gulf – Japan planned to take out the U.S., but would have to risk its own fleet. – Oct. 23, 1944, in 4 days Japan had many losses – After this battle, Allies had the Kamikazes to fear.

5. Battle of Iwo Jima – March 1945– Allies took hold of Iwo Jima Island that allowed them to island hop to Okinawa. Battle of Okinawa, April 1945 – The last island before getting to Japan, 350 miles away. – 10,000 troops Japanese & 12,000 Americans died.

6. Manhattan Project – 1942-45 U.S. government top secret research project to produce the first atomic bombs. Atomic Bomb (A-bomb): nuclear and massive explosive that it explodes from splitting an atom. – Testing took place in New Mexico July 1945. J. Robert Oppenheimer – the head of the project & lead scientist.

7. Dropping of the Atomic Bomb – US President Harry Truman had to decide to continue to battle Japan or end the war quickly with the A-Bomb. Truman took over after Frank D. Roosevelt’s death.

9. 3 days later, Aug. 9– A-bomb dropped in Nagasaki. – Over 70,000 people died Japan finally surrendered to General Douglas MacArthur on Sep 2, 1945 WWII was officially over.
