2 © 2015 albert-learning.com Future tense Future Tense : It is used to express an action which has not occurred yet and will occur after saying or in future. For example, “I will go to zoo tomorrow”, in this sentence the person intend for tomorrow’s visit to zoo. In short, these sentences express actions which will be done in future.

3 © 2015 albert-learning.com Future tense Structure of sentence Positive sentence Subject + auxiliary verb + main verb (present participle) + object Subject + will + (1st form of verb or base form +ing) + object Examples : 1) I will buy a computer tomorrow. 2) They will come here.

4 © 2015 albert-learning.com Future tense Negative sentence Subject + auxiliary verb+ not + main verb (present participle) + object Subject + will +not + (1st form of verb or base form +ing) + object To make negative sentence “not” is written after auxiliary verb in sentence. Examples : 1) I will not buy a computer tomorrow. 2) They will not come here.

5 © 2015 albert-learning.com Future tense Interrogative sentence Auxiliary verb + subject + main verb (present participle) + object Will + subject + (1st form of verb or base form +ing) + object Interrogative sentence starts with auxiliary verb “will” Examples : 1) Will I buy a computer tomorrow? 2) Will they come here?

6 © 2015 albert-learning.com Future tense The future can be expressed in several ways. Here are the different possibilities: Future Simple : will + base form of the verb Be Going To : am, is, are + going to + base form of the verb Shall : shall + subject + base form of the verb

7 © 2015 albert-learning.com Future tense Future Simple: Will + Base Form of the Verb This form is used to: 1) Describe a simple action in the future: Examples : a. She‘ll write the e-mail after lunch. b. Alice won’t help us decorate for the party. 2) Make a prediction or give a warning: Examples : a. Don’t lift that. You‘ll hurt yourself b. If you don’t finish the bid, the boss won’t give you a raise. 3) Make a spontaneous decision: Examples : a. You dropped your purse. I‘ll get it. b. You lost your mobile phone. I’ll find it.

8 © 2015 albert-learning.com Future tense Future – Be Going To We usually use am, is or are + going to + the base form of the verb to talk about actions in the future that have already been decided on. Examples : a. Dan‘s going to take the order over to the customer. b. The girls are going to sing ‘Amazing Grace’ now. c. They aren’t going to buy the house. d. I am not going to make dinner tonight. We’re going out to a restaurant.

9 © 2015 albert-learning.com Future tense Future: Shall Shall is used with the subjects I and we to make suggestions or to offer to do something for someone. It is always used in the form of a question. Examples : a. Shall we go for a walk? b. Shall I help you with that? c. Shall we order pizza now? d. Shall I open the door?

10 © 2015 albert-learning.com Future tense USE 1 "Will" to Express a Voluntary Action "Will" often suggests that a speaker will do something voluntarily. Similarly, we use "will not" or "won't" when we refuse to voluntarily do something. Examples: I will translate the email, so Mr. Smith can read it. Will you help me move this heavy table? I will not do your homework for you. I won't do all the housework myself!

11 © 2015 albert-learning.com Future tense USE 2 "Will" to Express a Promise "Will" is usually used in promises. Examples: I will call you when I arrive. If I am elected President of the United States, I will make sure everyone has access to inexpensive health insurance I promise I will not tell him about the surprise party. I won't tell anyone your secret.

12 © 2015 albert-learning.com Future tense USE 3 "Be going to" to Express a Plan "Be going to" expresses that something is a plan. It expresses the idea that a person intends to do something in the future. It does not matter whether the plan is realistic or not. Examples: He is going to spend his vacation in Hawaii. She is not going to spend her vacation in Hawaii. Michelle is going to begin medical school next year. Who are you going to invite to the party?

13 © 2015 albert-learning.com Future tense USE 4 "Will" or "Be Going to" to Express a Prediction Both "will" and "be going to" can express the idea of a general prediction about the future. Examples: The year 2222 will be a very interesting year. The year 2222 is going to be a very interesting year. The movie "Zenith" will win several Academy Awards. The movie "Zenith" is going to win several Academy Awards.
