Welcome to my classroom! -Mr. Fino

Why do we have rules, procedures, and routines? Safety Time Comfort LEARNING!!!

Classroom rules 1. Be respectful. 2. Follow directions and stay on task. 3. Raise your hand before speaking or leaving your seat. 4. No side conversations during direct instruction and whole class discussions.

Consequences 1 st time a rule is broken: You will be given a non-verbal warning. 2 nd time a rule is broken: You will be given an official warning. 3 rd time a rule is broken: You will be asked to sit in isolation. You will continue listening & working independently. A point will be deducted from your participation grade. After 15 minutes, you can return to the class. Make sure to remedy any problem behaviors for the rest of the period. 4 th time a rule is broken: You will bring a note home to your parent/guardian. If you are a repeat offender or your misbehavior involved Rule #1, you will be attending an After- School Detention with me the next day.

Tardiness & Absences “Lost time is never found again.” “Time is money.” –Benjamin Franklin Your presence is of the utmost importance. Simply being in your seat on time everyday puts you at a great advantage! We will adhere to school policy with respect to tardies and absences.

Homework Homework is an important piece of this class, for many reasons. Late homework will be penalized. Make sure to record assignments on your ‘Homework Log’ (if you use a planner, record it here as well). Refer to the Syllabus for more details.

Homework Typically, I will check homework as you diligently work on the ‘Opening Activity.’ With these checks, I am looking for completion. Homework gives you the opportunity to practice the material without fear of mistakes. While you will not be penalized for making mistakes initially, there will be ‘Homework Quizzes.’ On these quizzes, I will list 3-4 problems from the previous weeks’ work, and you will COPY your solutions. These quizzes will account for a percentage of your Homework grade. I will always give the solutions to each problem set. Therefore, you are expected to go back and fix all of your mistakes. Sometimes, homework will need to be completed online. In this day and age, we should look to save paper as much as possible. If this is an issue, talk to me and we can work something out. Make sure that you submit these assignments by the due date & time.

August 21, 2014 2.1 Practice #1-10, 20-25, 30 (p. 54) How will we head our papers?

Water, Tissue, & Restroom Policy As high school students, I ask that you use lunch and the passing periods to use the restroom. I encourage everyone to bring bottled water to class each day. Rarely will you see me without my Contigo bottle. Food will not be allowed in the classroom. If you have garbage to throw out, wait for a transition or after class. I’ve realized that a simple set of hand signals streamlines certain needs. Therefore: 1 = Restroom 2 = Tissue 3 = Pencil

Additional Routines and Procedures Enter the classroom quietly and politely. Begin the task on the board or projector. Do not interrupt students around you. Remove hats before entering the classroom. Each day will typically be broken up into different activities. Therefore, we will need to practice and perfect transitions. We will exit the classroom quietly and politely. We will push in our seats, and the classroom as a whole will be clean and tidy before our dismissal. The bell indicates that the next period is approaching. You must still wait for my dismissal to leave your seat.

Time Time is a precious commodity. When it comes down to it, there will simply never be enough time. Therefore, we must maximize our efficiency to preserve it. How will we do this? Participation Points: If you are in your seat on time, you will earn 2 points toward your participation grade. Transition Time: We will practice perfecting transitions over the course of the year. To incentivize this, I will time you. If the class can transition within the time 80% over a week, all will earn a participation point. Hall Pass Deduction: I will give you one free trip to the restroom during the week. If you choose to use the restroom or leave the classroom a second time, a point will be deducted from your participation for the day. Small Group Deduction: If I am working with a group and a major disruption occurs, a point will be deducted from this person’s participation grade.

In-Class Library Reading is an invaluable skill, and I encourage students to pick up a book when their work is completed. Feel free to bring your own books, or you can borrow one of mine. I would like books to remain in the classroom; however, if you consult with me personally, I will likely let you take it home.
