2 Form and Structure Poems are written in lines. Line length is used to fit rhythm, feeling, or thought. Lines that are grouped together are called a stanza. Stanzas are separated by space. Form is the way lines and words are arranged. The most common forms are ballad, epic, ode, sonnet, and free verse.

3 Form and Structure Ballad-A type of narrative poem that tells a story. They are meant to be sung or recited. It has a setting, a plot, and characters. Most have regular patterns of rhythm and rhyme. Epic-A long narrative poem about the adventures of a hero whose actions reflect the ideals and values of a nation or group

4 Form and Structure Ode-A type of lyric poem that addresses broad, serious themes such as justice, truth, or beauty. Sonnet-Has a formal structure, containing 14 lines and a specific rhyme scheme and meter. The sonnet, which means “little song,” can be used for a variety of topics.

5 Form and Structure Free Verse-A poem without a regular pattern of rhyme, rhythm, or meter. It is also used for a variety of subjects.

6 Form and Structure YOUR TURN: – Look at the poems on page 188. What do you notice about the forms? Refer to the number of lines in each poem
