3 What is the EU? The EU is a group of 28 member states from all over the Europe The aim (= goal) of the EU is to create a political and economic community that cooperates in economics, trade, social issues (education, healthe care), foreign policy, security, defence and judicial matters → people from all over the EU are free to travel, study, work and live in another member state without needing a visa

4 Member states Member states: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Rep., Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom Candidates: Iceland, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey Applicants: Albania Potential candidates which have not yet applied for membership: Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Norway are not members but cooperate economically and politically

6 History of the EU 1951 – The European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) is established (France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg 1967 – ECSC became European Community (EC). Denmark, Greece, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom joined 1993 – the Maastricht Treaty (=agreement) transformed the EC into the EU. Sweden, Finland and Austria joined 2004 – 10 more countries (also the Czech Rep.) took up membership, it was the biggest enlargement 2007 – Romania and Bulgaria entered the EU 2013 – Croatia is the last member

7 Symbols of the EU The European flag - the 12 stars in a circle symbolise the ideals of unity, solidarity and harmony among the peoples of Europe. The European anthem - the melody used to symbolise the EU comes from the Ninth Symphony composed in 1823 by Ludwig Van Beethoven Europe Day - The ideas behind the European Union were first put forward on 9 May 1950 by French foreign minister Robert Schuman. This is why 9 May is celebrated as a key date for the EU. The EU motto – „United in diversity“. It signifies how Europeans have come together, in the form of the EU, to work for peace and prosperity with many different cultures, traditions and languages.

8 A single currency – the euro The EU had set economic criteria that each member had to meet before they could adopt the euro In 2002 euro replaced the national currencies in 12 member states The eurozone (= EU member states which have adopted the euro) has since grown to 18 countries, the most recent is Latvia which joined on 1 January 2014 Denmark, Sweden and the United Kingdom decided not to join the eurozone

9 A single currency – the euro The bank issuing the euro is the European Central Bank (ECB) located in Frankfurt, Germany. The euro is divided into 100 cents Each country issues its own coins that have unified design on one side and a national design or emblem on the reverse, notes are identical in all countries

11 Structure of the EU The EU has a rotating presidency. Member countries take turns being in charge for six months at a time. The function is mostly symbolic The European Council consists of heads of state from all member countries. They propose (= suggest) issues to be discussed at future meetings

12 Structure of the EU The European Commission – the highest administrative (executive) body. Responsible for the day-to-day running. Proposes laws and policy to be discussed by the Council. The president is José Manuel Durrao Barroso. In Brussels. The Council of the EU – represents the national governments (legislative body). Also make and vote on laws, approves the budget. In Brussels. The European Parliament – 766 members directly elected by the citizens of the EU (legislative body). Make and vote on laws. Seat in Brussels and Strasbourg

14 Structure of the EU Other important parts are: The European Court of Justice – the seat is in Luxembourg, it is responsible for the law that the EU establishes for itself and the member states. The European Central Bank – located in Frankfurt, has exclusive authority (= power) for EU monetary policy

15 European City of Culture It is a title given to a city for a year. It is a chance for the chosen city to get some money from the EU to promote cultural events In 2013 Marseille in France and Košice in Slovakia held the title In 2014 Riga (Latvia) and Umea (Sweden) are holding the title In 2015 Plzeň and Mons (Belgium)
