4 HISTORY OF THE GAME Dr. James Naismith invented the game of basketball while teaching in Springfield Massachusetts in Wooden peach baskets were used as the goals and the game was played with an old leather soccer ball.

5 The original YMCA gym where basketball was first played.

6 The game of basketball moves outdoors to be played.

7 Metal rings with a netted bag replaced the peach baskets in 1893.

8 Wooden backboards were first used in 1894.

9 FACTS ABOUT THE GAME OF BASKETBALL
Basketball was named from the peach baskets used in the original game. Basketball is now played around the world at every level: playground, schools, college, professional, and in the Olympics. Today, more people watch basketball than any other sport in the United States.

10 Basketball Court Terminology
Baseline - Line on the end of the court. Sideline - Line on the side of the court. Half Court Line - Divides the court in half. Key - 3 second lane for the offensive team. Free Throw Line - Line where all foul shots are attempted Three Point Line - Shots made from beyond this line are worth 3 points. Center Jump Circle - Where jump ball takes place to start a game.

12 Basketball Positions Five team players usually include a center, two guards, and two forwards. #1 Guard - point guard, best ball handler #2 Guard - shooting guard #3 Small Forward - good outside shooter #4 Power Forward - rebounds / enforcer #5 Center - tallest player, usually plays inside close to the basket

13 Basic Basketball Rules
Five players from each team on the court at one time. A successful free throw attempt scores 1 point. A basket made inside the 3 point line scores 2 points. A basket made outside the 3 point line scores 3 points. A basketball game is started with a jump ball at the center jump circle.

14 Game Play Rules To move the ball in any direction, is must be dribbled or passed. A ball or player is out of bounds when touching the floor on or outside the line. The last team to touch the ball before it goes out of bounds losses possession of the ball. A player throwing the ball in from out of bounds must do so within 5 seconds.

15 Violations (turnovers)
Double dribble Traveling (walking with the ball) Kicking the ball Three second violation (offensive team) Stepping out of bounds or throwing the ball out of bounds Taking more than 5 seconds for a throw in Taking more than 10 seconds to advance the ball into the front court Back court violation

16 Personal Fouls Fouls are called on players for the following reasons: holding, pushing, tripping, blocking, contact with offensive player, rough play, and charging. A player that is fouled is awarded 1, 2, or 3 free throws or his/her team is awarded the ball out of bounds.

17 Basic Basketball Skills
Jump stop Pivoting - left and right foot Dribbling - left and right hand Passing - chest, bounce, and outlet Shooting - lay-ups, free throws, and jump shot Rebounding Triple threat position - pass, dribble, or shoot

18 OFFENSE The team on offense has the basketball and is trying to score.
Offensive strategies include the following: Man to man offense Zone offense Press offense Fast break In bounds plays

19 DEFENSE The team on defense does not have the ball and is trying to keep the offense from scoring. Defensive strategies include the following: Man to man Zone (several kinds) Presses (several kinds)

20 Basketball Terminology
Charging - offensive foul committed by the player with the ball Dribble - skill of bouncing the ball with one hand Fast break - moving the ball down the court quickly to score before the defense can set up Free throw - penalty shot awarded to a player for being fouled Jump ball - the method of putting the ball into play to start a game or overtime period

Personal foul - a player foul that involves contact with an opponent Pivot - when a player holding the ball keeps one foot on the floor and moves the other foot in any direction Rebound - a skill for obtaining possession of the ball after it bounces off the backboard or the rim Throw-in - a method of putting the ball in play from out of bounds Violation - an infraction of the rules
