1 Fungi Fun Guy or should I say Fungi. All are eukaryotic Are Heterotrophs- has to eat to obtain energy. Contain no Chlorophyll Have rigid cell walls

2 Fungi Fungi cannot catch its food so it must live on or close by it. They get food by secreting digestive juices onto a food source then absorbing the dissolved food. Many are decomposers that feed on dead organic matter. Others are parasites.

3 Fungi Fungi have a unique cell system UNDERGROUND called Hyphae that are thread like filaments that have a openings that allow the cytoplasm to move from one cell to another freely. Mycelium are the twisted mass of hyphae that makes up the majority of the fungi. Like roots but not roots.

6 Reproduction-Asexual and Sexual Asexual - parts of mycelium break off and become new fungi or spores are ejected into the wind already fertilized. Sexual - hypha from one individual joins with hypha from another individual.

7 Fungi In General Mycologist is scientist who studies fungi Largest fungi was 2.5 miles diameter and weighed 1000 tons

8 Fungi Mycorrihiza is a special relationship between a plant and a fungus where the plant roots provides food for the fungus and the fungus helps the plant gain nutrients and minerals and protects it form some disease causing organisms. Mutualism relationship both benefit.

16 Sac Fungi The largest group of Fungi. Truffles, morels, powdery mildews. Most use asexual reproduction but when use sexual form a sac called ASCUS for spores to develop in. Yeast are single celled sac fungi that reproduce by Budding (new cell pinches off old cell).

21 Club Fungi Club fungi have an umbrella shaped top called Basidia. Mushrooms usually grow at the edges of the mass of hyphae (usually in a circle). Most familiar club fungi is the gill fungi that grows gills under the cap. Destroying angel is extremely poisonous.

34 Imperfect Fungi Most do not fit into the other species. Most are parasites and cause disease in animals and plants. Athletes foot, Aflatoxin, and Penicillin. Some used to make cheese, soy sauce, citric acid.

37 Lichens Are a combination of fungus and algae that grow together in mutualism ( both benefit). They need only air, light, and minerals to grow. They help break down large rocks. Scientist use their absence or presence as a measure of the air quality since they absorb minerals and water directly from the air. They are PRODUCERS.
