2. The War of 1812-Causes 1.Impressment of American Sailors. Forced to join British Navy. British were blocking ports. 2.British rumored of arming Indians to fight the Americans. 3.War Hawks, American western and southern congressmen. These men wanted British land in Canada and pressed for war. Led by Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun Significance: The United States declared war on England (first declaration of war) who was busy fighting France in Europe. The first time the United States had declared war on anyone.

3. The Burning of Washington August 24 th, 1814 the British set fire to all public buildings, including the White House to disrupt the American government. Dolley Madison was able to save silverware from the White House plus a portrait of George Washington. Americans were angered and it increased the motivation to fight on.

4. Fort McHenry- Defense of Baltimore Francis Scott Key wrote the words to the Star Spangled Banner after witnessing the attack aboard a British vessel. This fort protected Baltimore Harbor. The British intended to destroy the city of Baltimore after taking care of Washington D.C. 5. National Anthem-Star Spangled Banner Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. 6. Battle of New Orleans British invasion of 7,500 troops against the ragtag army of the U.S. The 7,000 U.S. troops consisted of militia, free African Americans, Indians, and Pirates held off the British. (2,000 killed or wounded British vs. 20 Americas.) Greatest American victory of the war. The troops were led by Andrew Jackson who became a war hero. The war had officially ended two weeks earlier with the Treaty of Ghent. They didn’t get the news until much later.

7. What we gained from the war. 1.Patriotism- National Pride (showed that we could defend ourselves). 2.Gained respect from other European countries. 3.National anthem (Francis Scott Key) 4.Ended most of the Indian rebellions and forces them to move west. 5.War Hero- Andrew Jackson (Battle of New Orleans, who will later become president. 6.Americans begin to make their own goods (manufacturing). Industry grows during the war especially in the North and helps the economy. 7.Tariffs (taxes on imported goods) are added to British made goods making more expensive American products about the same cost. People start buying American goods. 8.We begin, as a country, to feel that we are meant by God to control the land of North America. This concept is called Manifest Destiny.

8. Non-Intercourse Act of 1809 It replaced Jefferson's failed Embargo Act. The act is a response to French and British impressment. It allowed the resumption of world trade with the exception of England and France. Significance: This is going to help our nation’s economy.
