1 Do Now: Think about any of the wars or military conflicts in which the United States has been involved in the past. What were some of the reasons people use to justify going to war?

2 What are some major events leading to The War of 1812? Economic Diplomacy Fails (Jefferson) –Embargo Act of 1807 halted all trade with Europe –Embargo is a government ban on trade with other countries –Embargo was unpopular in port cities, especially in the North

3 Jefferson Farewell Enter James Madison Jefferson did not want to run for a 3 rd term Madison was Jefferson’s Secretary of State Madison was an author of 30 of the 81 the Federalist Papers (including No. 10 and No. 51) Considered the most important contributor to the Constitution

5 Causes of the War –Impressment Britain and France were fighting a war in Europe Britain began capturing American sailors and “impressing” them, or forcing them to work on British ships By 1807, Britain had seized more than 1,000 American ships

Not everyone in the US wanted to go to war Military was small –Standing Army was small –Militia comprised most of our forces, and they did not like to fight outside of their state borders –Navy was quite small only 22 ships Britain was a great super power and we could lose territory that was gained in the Treaty of Paris or the Louisiana Purchase

10 B.The War Hawks –A group of Republican Congressmen from the South and West –Wanted war against Britain –Led by Senator John C. Calhoun of South Carolina and Henry Clary of Kentucky

11 D.The War in Canada –Americans were unprepared for war –The British captured Detroit and the Americans failed to capture Canada –Many Native Americans helped the British because they wanted to stop Americans from taking more land

13 E.The War at Sea –The U.S. Navy was young and outnumbered –In November of 1812, the British blockaded the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays –The blockade grew throughout the war –By 1813, most American ships were unable to leave their ports

16 Key Battles US Burns York (now Toronto) –US figured the Canadians would welcome the Americans and quickly join the US to expel Britain from North America…this did not happen Perry Defeated the British on Lake Erie –This gave the US control of Lake Erie Britain Blockades the Eastern Seaboard –This prevented shipping from leaving, and made the war more unpopular in the Northeast

19 F.The War on Land –Battle for Washington The British invaded Washington, D.C. in 1814 British soldiers burned the Capitol, the White House, and other public buildings Before the British burned the White House, Dolley Madison saved a famous painting of George Washington

21 2.Battle at Fort McHenry Francis Scott Key: an American lawyer and prisoner of the British Saw an American flag flying over Ft. McHenry after the battle The flag inspired Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner”

24 G.The Battle of New Orleans (1815) –The most famous/important battle of the War –Americans were lead to victory by General Andrew Jackson –The battle continued even after the war ended because word did not reach the Americans for several weeks –Casualties: Britain – 2,030; U.S. – 70

26 H.The Treaty of Ghent –In December, 1815, British and Americans met in Ghent, Belgium to negotiate a peace treaty –Results of the war: Britain and American became better allies America gained respect from other countries
