Aim: How do scientist organize their experimental information?

What do scientists do during experiments? They collect Data

What is data? Data generally refers to the results of trials, or tests, completed during experiments. GenderAcceptPraiseRemediate/ProbeCriticize M F

How can we organize this information? A data table (or chart) makes organizing data easier to read and study

Data Tables IndependentDependent The independent variable ALWAYS is written in the LEFT column and the DEPENDENT variable in the RIGHT.

What’s the next step after collecting data ? Graphing

Why do scientists utilize graphs? Graphs can provide us with a large amount of information quickly and allows us to analyze our results from an experiment.

Types of Graphs: Line Graph What is this graph telling us ?

Types of Graphs: Pie Graph What is this graph telling us?

Types of Graphs: Bar Graph or Histogram What is this graph telling us?

Rules for Constructing Graphs: Rule 1: The dependent variable is plotted on the vertical, Y-Axis. Rule 2: The Independent Variable is plotted on the horizontal, X-Axis. Rule 3: The spacing between the numbers on both axes must be in equal increments. (each box must be going up by the same amount)

Our Graph: Y X Independent Variable (Number of Jumping Jacks) Dependent Variable (Beats per minute) Control Group Experimental Group Legend The Effects of Exercise on Heart Rate

What are our results? Our results indicate that heart rate increased after the students performed 30 jumping jacks.

What is our conclusion? Was the hypothesis supported or rejected? This experiment supported our hypothesis. Physical exercise increases a person’s heart rate.
