© Dr. A. Weinberg SOL 3.5

© Dr. A. Weinberg Have you ever wondered how grown-ups know which way to go when they are driving? Drivers have to learn where to go…

© Dr. A. Weinberg Some drivers use a GPS system to help them find their way around. Some drivers use MapQuest to help them find their way around. Some drivers use a map or a road atlas to help them find their way around.

© Dr. A. Weinberg So if you plan to travel anywhere outside your neighborhood, you need to learn some map skills so you won’t get lost!

© Dr. A. Weinberg Let’s start at home… Where do you live? You could answer that question in a lot of ways!

© Dr. A. Weinberg You live… … in your house …in the United States of America …in Virginia …on your street … in Woodbridge …in North America …on planet EARTH!!

© Dr. A. Weinberg The Earth is our home. The Earth is one planet in our solar system.

© Dr. A. Weinberg The Earth is shaped like a round ball. The shape is called a sphere. Sphere-shaped models of the Earth are called globes.

© Dr. A. Weinberg A globe is a 3-dimensional model of the Earth. A globe is a 3-dimensional representation of the Earth.

© Dr. A. Weinberg Not only can a globe represent the Earth, but a map can also represent the Earth.

© Dr. A. Weinberg A map is a flat representation of the Earth. This is a map of the world.

© Dr. A. Weinberg There are different kinds of maps. There are also maps that show different things. world map unlabeled map of Europe Washington, D.C. subway map major roads in Virginia

© Dr. A. Weinberg Some maps show large areas. world map major roads in Virginia Some maps show smaller areas. Licky says, “Hi!”

© Dr. A. Weinberg A map shows a bird’s eye view of the area below. That means that a map is drawn as if YOU are the bird and are looking down below!

© Dr. A. Weinberg Maps show the ground and water from a bird’s eye view or from an airplane’s view.

© Dr. A. Weinberg There are some special things to know about reading a map. This is called a compass rose. It lets you know the map’s directions. The 4 cardinal directions are: ~ North ~ South ~ East ~ West

© Dr. A. Weinberg North is not always UP on a map. That’s why you need to look at the compass rose on each map. N = north E = east S = south W = west

© Dr. A. Weinberg North, south, east, and west are the 4 cardinal directions. However, there are additional directions (called intermediate directions). NE = northeast SE = southeast NW = northwest SW = southwest

© Dr. A. Weinberg When you first look at a map, you should look at the compass rose to find information about direction. You should also look at a map’s key. Not that kind of key!

© Dr. A. Weinberg A map key is sometimes called a legend. The map key shows objects and what they represent.

© Dr. A. Weinberg Now let’s take a look at a map of the Earth.

© Dr. A. Weinberg When we look at planet Earth, we can divide it into 7 major land masses, called continents.

© Dr. A. Weinberg This map does not have a compass rose or a key. It shows 7 continents.

© Dr. A. Weinberg This map does not have a compass rose or a key. It shows 6 oceans. Arctic Ocean

© Dr. A. Weinberg It is helpful to learn the shape of all 7 continents.

© Dr. A. Weinberg We live on the continent of North America. A close-up viewA view of the Earth

© Dr. A. Weinberg South America is another continent. A close-up view A view of the Earth

© Dr. A. Weinberg Asia and Europe are 2 more continents. A close-up view A view of the Earth

© Dr. A. Weinberg Antarctica, Australia, and Africa are also continents. A close-up view

© Dr. A. Weinberg Let’s and review! The 7 continents are: 1. North America 2. South America 7. Europe 6. Antarctica 5. Africa 3. Asia 4. Australia

© Dr. A. Weinberg Let’s and review some more! 1. Atlantic 2. Pacific 3. Indian 4. Arctic 5. Southern The 5 oceans are:

© Dr. A. Weinberg Let’s go back and consider the Earth. We can pretend to divide the Earth into sections to help us create maps and globes. Do you see this line? People have chosen this place to draw a line on the map. The line is not really on the land or in the ocean.

© Dr. A. Weinberg The equato r is an imaginary line. That means that you cannot look down and see the equator because it is not really there. equator

© Dr. A. Weinberg The equato r divides the Earth into a top and bottom (North and South). equator But don’t be confused because the equator runs east-west. Northern hemisphere Southern hemisphere

© Dr. A. Weinberg The prime meridian is an imaginary line. That means that you cannot look down and see the prime meridian because it is not really on the land or in the ocean.

© Dr. A. Weinberg The prime meridian divides the Earth into a left and right (East and West). But don’t be confused because the prime meridian runs north-south. Western hemisphere Eastern hemisphere

© Dr. A. Weinberg The equator and the prime meridian are imaginary lines that help us to discuss the Earth and where places are located.

© Dr. A. Weinberg When we talk about how the equator and prime meridian divide the Earth, we refer to hemispheres. A hemisphere is half a sphere. Northern hemisphereSouthern hemisphere Eastern hemisphere Western hemisphere

© Dr. A. Weinberg The prime meridian, equator, cardinal directions, continents, oceans… so much to consider! Let’s put it all together with a grid system.

© Dr. A. Weinberg Grid systems use letters and numbers to identify the exact location of a place. A 9 R 8 D 1 h

© Dr. A. Weinberg It’s kind of like playing the game Battleship. ABCDEFGABCDEFG 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

© Dr. A. Weinberg Find Virginia on the map. ABCDEFGABCDEFG 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

© Dr. A. Weinberg Virginia is located on the grid at 7 C. ABCDEFGABCDEFG 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

© Dr. A. Weinberg Now that you know all about maps, what could you say when someone asks where you live?

© Dr. A. Weinberg You could say that you live….. in Woodbridge in the United States of America in a house or apartment or townhouse in your classroom in Virginia in Australia in North America in the Eastern hemisphere in the Western hemisphere When you are ready to end the slideshow, click the house.

© Dr. A. Weinberg You could say that you live….. in North America…… and??

© Dr. A. Weinberg You could say that you live….. in Woodbridge …and???

© Dr. A. Weinberg You could say that you live….. in the United States of America… and???

© Dr. A. Weinberg You could say that you live….. in a house or apartment or townhouse …and???

© Dr. A. Weinberg You could say that you live….. in your classroom …of course not!

© Dr. A. Weinberg You could say that you live….. in Virginia …and???

© Dr. A. Weinberg You could say that you live….. in Australia… but that would not be correct!

© Dr. A. Weinberg You could say that you live….. in the Eastern hemisphere… no…try again!

© Dr. A. Weinberg You could say that you live….. in the Western hemisphere …and???

© Dr. A. Weinberg You now know a lot about Map Skills!
