Hair & Makeup

 During the 1940s clothing was rationed because of the war. Because of this women put more effort into their hair and makeup, rather then their clothing. Women never left their homes without their hair properly placed and their makeup well done. Makeup such as this would have been unthinkable merely twenty years earlier.  When we think of makeup from the 1940s we generally think of rounded red lips, but there’s definitely more to it than that. For example, alcohol was rationed during the war so colognes and soaps were rationed and glycerin became a key ingredient in making munitions.  Women began to use substitutes for scarce cosmetic substances. Some examples of this were burnt cork for mascara, cochineal or beetroot juice for lipstick, bi-carbonate of soda for deodorant and gravy browning for leg tint. Theatre makeup was also used.  This gave a darker and more defined image of their makeup styling.  Petroleum jelly was used on the lips and women protested the War Production Board’s plan to ration lipstick, so it became a key element in makeup.

Okay so now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, I’m going to start with I’m going to show boy’s hair. Then some basic makeup stuff which are going to have slides that are more in deft about the different sections and shapes for makeup of that time, including images, how-tos, and YouTube videos. Then I’m going to do slides for the different acceptable hair styles of that time and their how-tos. Sorry if it’s too much… Contents; Slide 4- Hair For Men Slide 6- Make-Up Slide 13- Hair

 Hair was generally parted on the left but you can part it on either side.  Product was a must. So hair gel or mouse is more than welcomed.  Texture is welcomed though the men but during this they era kept their hair traditionally straight.  Keep your hair generally short or medium length.  That’s about it.

So really most of the information in these slides is not important but still could be used however you want so I’m going to try to outline the important stuff in “victory red.” These two videos will basically show you everything in uder 10 minutes. https://youtu.be/7 5TwRLgxMXo https://www.yout ube.com/watch?v =fy7SjCCLWWI

Foundation; Foundations were a heavy affair, generally darker than the natural skin tone. Just use your own foundation to get the base. Then apply loose powder in a thin arch from the top of your cheekbone up toward the temples. Thick Pan-Cake and Sun-Glow foundation was used. What you should do; Apply foundation that is your skin tone or slightly darker. Contour your cheeks and use a light blush. Foundation

Here are some examples of acceptable lip colours for that time Tip; Lipstick was matte so if the lips require a shine then a dab of petroleum jelly would be used. The lip shape was hunter’s bow and the smear Lip liner was beginning to be used in this time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tno1LVu9p3o Is a great tutorial for how to do the cupid’s bow shape lipstick, which was the most common shape of the 1940s. What you should do; So basically outline your lips doing the cupid’s bow shape on the upper lip, then fill your lips in with a red colour.

1.“ First dab a bit of cleansing cream on your lips and wipe all coloring from them with a tissue. Next, powder the area lightly. Then, rub your brush into your lipstick, and beginning at the outer corner of the upper lip, draw a line, slightly above the natural lip line, toward the center. Repeat the process from the opposite corner. Carefully outline the lower lip likewise, and fill in both upper and lower outlines with color. be sure that you’ve drawn clear to the corners of both lips, and to do this, your mouth must be ‘slightly open’ during the process – remember this! 2. In applying lip rouge, the new rage is ‘full lips’! You needn’t think you have to follow the natural line unless your lips suit you perfectly. You should experiment with ” new mouths”. Often, by putting the fullness of your lips in a slightly altered position, you discover a different facial expression …’ one which may improve the “balance” of your face.” -http://glamourdaze.com/2012/07/1940s-make-up-the- lipstick-decade.html

They were more natural. Generally a shade darker then the natural colour with a clear arc. They were generally thicker and curved towards the center of the ac and pointed towards the hair line. What you should do; Brush over your eyebrows in an arc with a natural looking eye liner.

 Due to the shortage of makeup women usually wore blacks and greys on their eyes with a slight smokey-eye effect. Eye liner was introduced during the late 40s. They used heavy mascara. What You should do; Apply (brown/black) eye liner and mascara to the upper lashes. Apply eye shadow up to your crease according to your preference colour wise. Stick to natural or black colours.

1. Wash hair and dry until it is barely damp. 2.Part your hair deep on one side. This is important to get the peek-a-boo effect over one eye. 3.Using a 1-inch diameter curling iron, curl small sections of hair, beginning at the top. Each time, do not unwind the curling iron, but open it up slightly and slide the curl off the barrel. Then pin the curl in place with a bobby pin. 4.After you’ve done all the curls and have them pinned in place, wait a few minutes for your hair to cool. 5.When your hair is cool, remove the bobby pins. Use your fingertips to loosen the curls into waves. Because one side is parted so deeply, the other side will have hair that partly covers one eye. You can put a bobby pin in the wave over the eye so that you can see. Otherwise, glance seductively out from your peek-a-boo bangs and charm everyone.

 Of all the 1940’s hairstyles, this is probably one of the most stylish. Begin by washing hair the night before and letting it air dry until it is damp. To set your hair in pin curls, comb damp hair and part into small sections. You’re going to pin each curl with a standard bobby pin, so sections must be small. Wind each curl around your finger smoothly. Pin each curl in place with a bobby pin.  Gently tie a silk scarf around your hair before going to bed. Sleeping on pin curls will take some getting used to, but the results are worth it. In the morning, remove pins and gently finger comb your hair. If you use a hairbrush, don’t overdo it, or you’ll brush the curl out. Letting pin curls fall loose from a side part was one of the sexiest 1940’s hairstyles.

 1. Take the bang section gently back comb the base. Smooth the front and roll the ends back.  2. Pin the curl on one side.  3. Now take the whole top section of the head, leaving out the sides.Back comb using a boar bristle brush.Back comb  4. Smooth the front of the section, and take the ends all together and twist them.  5. Now pin the twist to the back of the head with a large vertical bobby going upwards into the twist.pin the twist  6. Take a side section and twist it back.  7. Pin the twist into your large vertical bobby.  8. Repeat on the other side.  9. Now take ends of all 3 twists, twist them together and pin them into a bun to cover all your bobbies!

 1. Section off the bang section.  2. In horizontal sub sections, work through the bangs, back combing with a comb or boar bristle brush.back combing boar bristle brush.  3. Smooth the section from the back. Now, roll the bangs forwards.  4. Roll all the way to the scalp. Hold the curl against the head. Now pin the inside of the roll to the base from both sides. The bobbies should grab each other in the middle of the curl. Now pin the inside  5. Pull the edges of the roll out a bit to shape and balance it.  6. Section off both sides of the hair. Grab the back section as if you were going to ponytail it.  7. Using your thumb as a roller, roll the ends of the back section upwards to the base of the head.  8. Hold the roll against the head and carefully remove your thumb. Use several large bobbies to pin the inside of the roll to the base of the head from either side, making sure that your bobbies grab each other on the inside of the roll for stability. Use as many as you need till the roll feels secure. Now pull gently at the outside edges of the roll to shape and widen it.  9. Make a pin curl with each side section and pin to the outside of the roll to finish the look.

 1. Take the back section and comb it smooth.  2.Roll it under while directing it to one side, so that it spreads across the forehead.  3. Pin the flat curl discreetly on the side.  4. Take a section on the side from the top of the head to behind the ear. Roll it back into a high pin curl.  5. Pin it like a victory roll on one side.  6. Take the other side section and over-direct it. Wrap the ends of it around your thumb to form another curl.  7. Pin it on the opposite side, nestled next to your second curl.  8. Make sure all 3 curls are secure with pins through their centers and under the base so that they are discreet. Add more pins if needed.

 That’s basically it but you can find plenty more on YouTube.  VintageDancer is a great website to get a general idea of clothing from that time period, just go on their website and click 1940s.  That’s all folks!
