MOTOR OIL By Tom Riis and Zane

History Motor oil is petroleum based lubricant used in internal combustion engines. Motor oil works by creating a separating film between surfaces of nearby moving parts to minimize direct contact between them, decreasing friction, wear, and production of excessive heat, thus protecting the engine.

Raise and Extract The life of a can of motor oil starts deep within the earth’s surface where it is pumped out by oil rigs. United States produces an estimated 9 million barrels of crude oil per day and imported 13.21 million barrels per day from other countries.

Processing Oil A barrel of crude oil has a mixture of all sorts of hydrocarbons in it. Oil refining separates everything in the oil and refines it into useful substances. Oil is refined in many ways such as removing impurities within the oil, chemical processing, and fractional distillation.

Manufacturing The manufacturing process of oil starts on the assembly line. A machine lines up thousands of bottles to be filled with designated amounts of high quality oil. The bottles are then fitted with the companies logos and other decals and then shipped off to the consumer.

Usage Coating metal parts with oil keeps it from being exposed to oxygen. Motor oil also cleans, inhibits corrosion, improves sealing and cools the engine by carrying heat away from the moving part Motor oil mostly consists of hydrocarbons, organic compounds consisting entirely of carbon and hydrogen.

Recycling To recycle motor oil, you should put it in a closed container Then give it to a recycling center The recycling center can use it as raw material for petrochemical industries The re-refining of used motor oil takes up to 50 to 85 percent less energy to refine than standard used motor oil.
