 After the industrial revolution in the Victorian era, the continuation of burning fossil fuels and plundering our planet’s natural resources; the Human race finally realises that we are quickly draining the planet and killing it.  Many long term solutions have been drawn up but we need some short term solutions to try and reach those long term ones........... Genesis

 Shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2007 as part of the face lifted range, the Focus ECOnetic is an emissions-friendly model, similar to Volkswagen's BlueMotion range, using a 109 PS 1.6 Duratorq TDCi engine with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Aerodynamic features including low-resistance tyres contribute to 65 mpg -imp (4.3 L/100 km; 54 mpg -US ) fuel consumption figure with average CO 2 emissions of 115g/km (“Ford Focus – Wikipedia” n.d.).

2 nd Generation Features To increase positive environmental impacts that will improve the sustainability of the car and keep the new ECOnetic Focus making more money than Ford’s competition.

Auto Start-Stop SystemAuto Start-Stop System  Turns off engine when car is idle, for example traffic lights.  It is an automatic process if system is activated.  Engine seamlessly turns itself off, once the hand brake is secured, without the driver or passengers noticing.  The engine automatically restarts itself when the driver gets the car ready to pull away again.  Ford claim that: The system can reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 5% in mixed driving conditions. While in an urban environment and in heavy traffic the savings could increase to as much as 10%.” http://www.ford.co.uk/FordECOneticTechnology

Optimised Gear Shift Indicator LightOptimised Gear Shift Indicator Light  This is a small light on the rev counter which lights up when it is the best time to change up a gear.  The system senses how the driver is driving by taking account of the road gradient, vehicle load and the driver’s individual driving style – it then identifies the most suitable time to change gear.  By moving more swiftly through the gears, many drivers could cut fuel costs by avoiding unnecessarily high engine speed, reduce CO2 emissions and decrease wear on engine and transmission components. The same principle in video gaming

Beneficially applicable to different technologies How the new ECOnetic can improve environmental satiability for other technologies. This is not limited to other car manufacturers.

Smart Regenerative ChargingSmart Regenerative Charging  Smart Regenerative Charging creates 'free' electrical energy when you brake which is used to boost your existing power sources. This helps to ensure that the battery is kept charged in the most efficient way thus reducing the amount of fuel used.  This is has been applied in things like trains as when they brake they can produce electricity to reduce the amount needed from the overhead wires or the third rail.

Redesigned Aerodynamic Body ShapeRedesigned Aerodynamic Body Shape  A redesign for any moving vehicle’s body can make all the difference for combating air resistance.  Being able to slice through the air at higher speeds with less power needed is highly cost efficient.  That is why cars divide the air to go above the bonnet and over the roof or bellow the car under the body or through the car by going through to the engine to aid the fuel ignition.  The Siemens Vectron DE locomotive on the bottom left has the same principle by trying to divide where the air goes which is why it has a slight V shape for the front and back cabs.

2 nd Generation Design How a new design can affect Ford’s image and possibly their sales revenue. But also how can a new design of eco friendly car can affect the attitude of customers and future customers.

New Design = New Customers?New Design = New Customers?  New design to increase customer desire for more modern looking cars.  This appeals to both men and women due to gender neutral colours and shapes. It is usual for men and women to like different cars because of their shape or colour choices.  Our society is based upon consumer desire to own the newest product, and it is fuelled when new products have been designed to look unusual to what consumers are accustomed to.

Ford Brand and Sales RevenueFord Brand and Sales Revenue  2006 was a very bad year for Ford, with them making a loss of $12.6 billion.  2007 was the year of the 1 st generation ECOnetic and the end of financial year total for Ford was a loss of $2.7 billion.  Even though that is still a negative figure that is a $9.9 billion increase in capital from the previous financial year.  Every area of sales, except North America, experienced growth in 2007.  It seems that the eco friendly car definitely made its mark for Ford and proved successful enough to produce a new model of it for 2011.  Ford even branched out and now have the Focus, Fiesta and Transit ECOnetic models to purchase.
