Green Delta: Top Region for biobased products and sustainable processes Version, 24/11/2010

1 ‘Green Delta’ ‘Green’ Green products Green processes ‘Greening’ of residues ‘Delta’ Initiative  Zeeland  West-Brabant In close cooperation with:  Oost en West-Vlaanderen +

2 Ambition and goals Ambition:  Green Delta is the top biobased region of Europe (in cooperation with its Flemish partners) Goals:  Making industry and agriculture future-proof and more sustainable  Strengthen the relations between process industry and agriculture (‘agro meets chemistry’)  Focus on big companies and SME’s  Adapt to dynamics (transformations in existing companies and new companies)  Develop instruments/conditions that facilitate companies (knowledge, innovation projects, top locations, multimodal infrastructure)  Invest 400 Mio euros the next 4 years in innovations (private and public) and realiazing employment maintenance or new jobs (± 4.000)

3 Unique Selling Points ‘Green Delta’  Euregional cooperation in strategy and projects  Appealing business network −Companies are already very active (big companies as well as SME’s) −Companies work together with knowledge institutes in various countries  Pilot facilities to speed up innovations −Biobase Europe (Gent) −Green Chemistry Campus (Bergen op Zoom)  Physical space at hand −Combination of locations, space, environmental “space” and multimodal infrastructure (incl. pipelines) −Presence of utilities (CO 2, water, H 2, heat)  Innovative agricultural sector −Cultivation of green commodities −Development of new crops (Rusthoeve)

4  Focused education in development −Biobase Europe (Terneuzen)  Supra-regional cooperation and implementation structure −A steering committee (with chairman) −Investment funds; and utilize venture funds −Project implementation (REWIN, EIZ, Port Authorities): brokers of the region between knowledge institutes and companies and between promising projects and financing

5 Research (fundamentally) TUD - Delft WUR - Wageningen UT - Twente TUE - Eindhoven Univ. Gent Others Development (infrastructure for pilots)  Pilotplants: Gent, Green Chemistry Campus  Companies: DOW, Yara Sabic, Cosun  Researchprograms: Catch Bio, B-Basic, TNO  Infrastructure: MUP/ pipelines Knowledge chain PositioningGreen Delta ‘Companies in the Delta have networks wih Knowledge institutes’ Pilotfacilities (Biobase Europe, Green Chemistry Campus) and cofinancing by goverments  Topregion (‘Agro feeds chemistry’, new agro stocks)  Topplayers  Valorisation via Investmentfunds and brokers Locations, space, environment, infrastructure (multimodal), Speeding up realisation via brokers and venture capital Valorisation (dedicated/scaling)  Products: dyes, proteins  Processes: Shell, Cgen, Total, DOW  Residues: reuse (agricultural residues, water, CO 2, H 2, heat) Products  Biofuels (1 st generation)  Synbra (biopolymers)  Groene Poort Rilland  Biobased fertilizers  Proteins Rialised In development Green Delta covers the complete chain

6 Ambition accompanied by a solid implementation structure  Steering committee: chairman, business community, polititians  Implementation: REWIN, EIZ (regional development co.), Port Authorities  Financing: Investmentfunds (cofinanciering development and revolving fund valorisation), private (companies, venture capital)  Business networks: on the Delta level and specific areas  Toplocations (including Biopark Terneuzen, Green Chemistry Campus, Agropark Dinteloord,)
