Lifesize, dimensions variable What is represented in art is a reflection of the world around the artist.  Artworks of the past including Classical and Renaissance Periods reflected an interest in creating a sense of realism, perfection, a clear description of the human anatomy, with a focus on religion or documentary purposes. Post Modern and Contemporary art are still experimental with new technologies in their representation of the figure, however, strong conceptual meaning is of focus.  Developments in technology (e.g. photography, sequential photographs), changed the way changed how art was perceived and what artists could create. Hence in the Modernism Period (late 1800s) artists became more experimental, breaking away from artistic traditions. This included presenting the figure in a variety of ways. For example, the Futurism Movement embraced speed and motion due to planes, trains and automobiles and conveyed this sense of dynamic energy in their artworks.

Lifesize, dimensions variable free easier difficult inner strength With all the technologies available today we should be free. Life is made easier by new technologies such as the iPhone, Internet, wave and pay. However it is also made very difficult at times. Tsunamis, earthquakes and recessions are things that pull us down, yet, time and time again, the inner strength of people outshines these difficulties. jumping with joy restricted I wish to convey a figure that seems to be jumping with joy, giving a of sense of strength and freedom in that movement. However I still want to convey that the jump is restricted, being pulled back due to the difficulties in life.

5 I love the sense of energy and strength gained from this motion

6 Both of these sculptures are reflective of the world at the time. The sense of movement is created by the use of light and shadow, and the extension of the figures’ contours through drapery or breaking into the negative space, has been highly influential in the design of my artwork to convey energy and movement. Slab for body > rolled into a cylinder > manipulated into torso shape 3. Small pinch pot moulded around thumb for head and neck 4. Coils extruded and shaped to form arm and leg limbs. 5. Use clay bits and pieces of coil for extended contours 6. Pinch pot that is carved into for base.

9 Planning processes 1.Create torso using slab and rolling into a cylinder 2.Bend torso into shape and allow to 3.Add coils for legs -> Originally tried to use a pinch pot for the base which did not work as it became misshapen when I attempted to join to legs. became misshapen when I attempted to join to legs. -> Coils were then used with little success -> Coils were then used with little success -> Then created a small 1cm thick slab base (oval) then joined four -> Then created a small 1cm thick slab base (oval) then joined four coils coming up from this. Joined these coils to the legs while coils coming up from this. Joined these coils to the legs while figure was laying down. figure was laying down. -> Carved back these thick coils when the clay was leather hard. hard. Coils Small slab for base Leg

11 The Planning Process could have been improved in the following ways : Needed to think more about the sculpture in the round before starting and consider which parts would easily get knocked off / leaned on as I worked. Should have planned more thoroughly for back and other side as there is less detail, but also slightly out in proportion. During Artmaking : At times needed to consider the need to allow sections to dry more before attempting to attach, as weight and gravity caused issues with keeping the work upright and stable). Needed to create a thicker slab for the torso and roll it into a cylinder as the thinner slab is more difficult to work with.

I have a learnt a lot from this process, including how to take risks in my artmaking. At times I had to make cuts that I was unsure about in order to improve the work (I hoped!).
