3 WHAT IS COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS The Indiana Department of Education defines a college and career ready individual as one who has the knowledge, skills and abilities to succeed in post-secondary education and economically viable career opportunities. OUR MISSION To ensure all SHCSC graduates are exposed to a diverse range of experiences in order to be prepared for and accepted to a post-secondary or career opportunity. 3

4 WHY COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS FOR SHCSC  It’s important that career exploration be as REAL as possible. Fit their strengths and interests.  Fill the career and job skills of the Indiana workforce to support the efforts of placing Indiana workers in jobs in the state.  Indiana High School Diploma –  Indiana State Board of Education is considering a change.  Suggested implementation with the freshman class of 2018-2019 4

6 WHY COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS FOR BUSINESSES & THE COMMUNITY  Workforce demands graduates be marketable and ready for work.  Connect students to jobs and community.  Internships, job shadows, etc.  We want to keep our BEST and BRIGHTEST in Harrison County and the surrounding region. When education understands workforce & economic development, we will improve the overall quality of our community. 6

7 HOW WILL WE GET THERE  8th Grade Career Class where students dive deeper into their interests and strengths while exploring careers and colleges.  Selection of career cluster and pathway to help guide a student’s high school graduation plan.  Implementation of Naviance, a comprehensive college & career readiness platform that helps align student interests and strengths to career goals. 7

8 HOW WILL WE GET THERE  Preparing for College & Career Class (PCC) - Exploration Trips  Provide students opportunities to visit college campuses and regional companies.  Curriculum Development  Build rigor and relevance in all classes.  Increase in Dual Credit and Advanced Placement Offerings.  PRIDE - Work Ethic Certification (Currently Senior Year)  A set of five competencies that emphasize the “soft skills” that are crucial to employers.  Persistence, Respectful, Initiative, Dependability, Efficiency  Employer offered incentives for students coming to them with the PRIDE Certification. 8

9 HOW WILL WE GET THERE Project Lead the Way – Activity-Project-Problem-Based Learning  Implementation of PLTW Gateway at the junior high school.  Engineering - Design and Modeling 2015-16  Engineering Automation and Robotics 2016-17  Computer Science 2016-17  Schedule will allow for all JH students to have these classes. 9

10 CAREER CLUSTERS AND PATHWAYS  Career Cluster  A group of careers that share common features.  There are 16 national career clusters.  Career Pathway  A smaller group of jobs within a career cluster that use similar skills.  Each career cluster contains several career paths.  Career Pathway Plan of Study- a roadmap to help students achieve their post high school career goals. 10

11 SOUTH HARRISON CAREER CLUSTERS 1. Health Sciences, Human Services 2. Engineering, Information Technology 3. Manufacturing, Logistics, Architecture, Construction & Skilled Trades 4. Business, Finance, Marketing 5. Law, Public Safety, Military Service 6. Education & Training 7. Arts, AV Technology 8. Agriculture, Natural Resources  Students choose a pathway to help guide their high school experience.  A system that allows for movement between pathways.  Bi-annual advisement with counselors to review pathway plan. 11

12 TRAVEL PATHWAYS STARTING 2016 – 2017 SOUTH CENTRAL CAMPUS  Advanced Manufacturing  PLTW Engineering  Early Childhood Education  Hospitality Management CORYDON CENTRAL CAMPUS  Business Management/Accounting  Health Science  Education Profession 12 Travel Pathways are available on one campus. These pathways will include 2 or more career classes that could lead to industry certifications, dual credits & the opportunity to do a senior year internship.

16 PATHWAY OPEN HOUSE  Both high schools will host a Pathway Open House on the following days:  CCHS April 12 th 5:00-7:00  SCHS April 13 th 5:00-7:00  Students and parents are invited to attend anytime during the 5:00-7:00 time frame. 16
