7. What types of Families are there? Different types of families EXTENDED FAMILY – A family in which there are two or more generations living together in the same home. NUCLEAR FAMILY – A two generation family that includes a mother, father and their children, biological or adopted SINGLE-PARENT OR ONE PARENT – A family in which one parent lives with one or more dependent children.

8. COMMON LAW – Unmarried couple/common residence for a certain number of years. (usually 2 years) COMMUNE – A group of people married who live together and share responsibilities. COHABITATION – To live together as husband and wife but not married. BLENDED FAMILY – Reconstituted family, stepfamily, “brady bunch.” STEP PARENT – Is someone who is not your blood relative who is married to your mother or father.

10. Types of Marriages BIGAMY – Married to anyone else while still married. POLYGAMY – More than one spouse at one time. POLYGYNY – A man married to 2 or more wives. POLYANDRY – A woman married to 2 or more men. MONOGAMY – Practice of being married to one person at one time. GENEALOGY – A record or table sharing the descent of an individual or family from certain ancestor.

11. Positions with in the Family SIBLING – Brothers and sisters by law and/or blood. MATIARCHAL – Power “head” of family is a woman. PATRIARCHAL – Power “head” of family is a man. PATRILOCAL – Resides with (near) husband’s relatives. MATRILOCAL – Resides with (near) wife’s relatives.

12. FAMILY TREE DISTINCTIONS PATRILINITOR – Descent is traced in the male line. MATERILINEAL – Descending from or characteristic to the female line. ENDOGAMY – Tendency to marry within your own religious, racial or cultural group. FAMILY OF ORGIN – Is the nuclear or composite family into which one is born and in which he/she is reared. FAMILY OF PROCREATION – Is the nuclear or composite family which one joins in establishing through marriage.

13. OTHER DEFINITIONS MARRIAGE – A socially and legally recognized agreement between two people containing economical and sexual rights and obligations. CLAN – A united group of relatives claiming a common ancestor. HOUSEHOLD – A number of persons dwelling as one unit under one roof. KIBBUTZ – An agricultural collective settlement characterized by common ownership or property and care of children is shared.
